BIG DATA

Introduction
• With the growth of digital footprint, data is being generated every where from
household to public data and private firm’s data.

• Big Data is actually information asset that is either high-volume, high-velocity or

high-variety that requires further processing for better decision making and
analytical purposes.

• At present, the available tools are very complicated and makes the big data even
bigger.

• as a thumb rule, any data that exceeds the current capacity of processing is big
data
Why “BIG Data”?
1. Many big companies and governments have initiated programs to analyze big
data. For example – Wal-Mart alone accumulated transaction data of 1 million
customers every hour.

2. Facebook handles 40-45 billion pictures in its database

3. Newer technology and tools are generating even more data and managers
need information on a real time basis which is possible through advanced data
analytics through “big data analytics”
Big Data Components
• Data Sources: To store the operational and functional data related to the
business. The common examples are systems, machine logs and sensors and social
media threads.

• Data Platforms, Warehouses and Discovery Platforms: To store the data in

databases, and update timely.

• Big Data Analytics Tools and Apps: It makes the “front end” applications where
data is displayed and used by executives, analysts and managers. These are used
for decision making and reporting.
Characteristics of Big Data
VOLUME
• The data has multiplied more than 30x since 2009
• Exponential growth in data

VARIETY
• Data is being generated in all forms and types and structures
• there is static data as well as running or real time data
• Multiple type of data from a single application of program

VELOCITY
• Dais not only being generated fast but being demanded fast as well
• data analytics is being done real time
• Late processing may lead to late decisions which can cost heavily like Healthcare
Services, managing Utilities etc.
Big Data Integration
• Need for a central agency that collects the data, sort the data by eliminating
duplicity and convert it in to a meaningful data.

• Development of a robust and capable platform required for integration

• A whole set of infrastructure will be required to facilitate data scientists create

new models and strategy that can capture legacy data as well.

• The integrated data should be flexible enough to absorb future changes.
