Advantages of Nokia Siemens Networks DWDM Planning
Tool TransNet
TransNet with λ-routing and physical link simulation available for customers
• Planning has been verified in extensive lab tests
• Calculations include aging margins, also for full channel load and longest possible
links

Risks when planning without physical link simulation

• Dispersion compensation for LH and especially ULH links will be different in
planning and reality
– Trial and error during installation, no guarantee for EOL
• Impossible to find optimum launch power which already supports full channel load
(trade-off between non-linear effects and OSNR)
– No guarantee for operation with full channel load
• New light paths which are longer than light paths initially deployed might require
new trial-end error installation steps on the complete network

A planning tool simulating dispersion, non-linear effects and

OSNR is a MUST for a reliable DWDM LH network

Nokia Siemens Networks’ TransNet
…Much More Than Adding up OSNR Margins

Network simulations consider physical effects

• Such as dispersion, non-linear effects, OSNR and
component aging up to full channel count
• Benefit: Guaranteed end-of-life performance without
unnecessary margins (CAPEX optimizer)

Advanced routing algorithms

• Map meshed traffic demands to links and wavelengths
• Benefit: Use up to 30% less wavelengths in a mesh
scenario

Input for ordering, installation and commissioning

• LOM, cabling plan, card placement, commissioning
parameters …
• Benefit: automation of planning, ordering, commissioning;
speeding up processes, and eliminating faults

Network Configuration File - Philosophy

What is a NCF file?

For ease-of-use, most of the startup configuration settings are done via a “Network
Element Configuration File (NCF)”. The NCF is an xml-file which carries all necessary
information about an NE, its configuration and operational state any time during
lifetime.
How to create a NCF file?
NCF files are automatically generated by TransNet.
How to use a NCF file?
A NCF file is required for commissioning of an NE and is distributed to the NE either
remotely or locally.
Every time the operational state (e. g. channel upgrade) of an NE changes, the NCFs
of the concerned link need to be updated.
Client configuration is not done via NCF, but is executed locally via the element
manager.

How to Make Network Upgrades Safe and Smooth:
Network Configuration Files – The automated way to commissioning

Main Advantages of NCF commissioning

- Saves several commissioning hours in every network element
- Enables switching of a complete wavelength path by a single switching
command (instead of multiple LCT commands)
- Avoids procedural errors of manually switching lambda paths
- Ensures that every newly switched lambda path will operate under end-
of-life operating conditions (maximum channel count)
- Makes network upgrades safe and error-free, even over years of
operation and multiple reconfigurations

Network Configuration Files generated by TransNet

make network commissioning efficient, faultless and future-proof

Content of NCF

The content of the NCF has a hierarchy based on containment relationship. The root
of this hierarchy is the NE, which functions as the container of all items addressed in
the file.
NCF header
NCF label
NCF content (XML format)

NE attributes (i. e. NE type and names)

Example:

List of configured shelves

Slot assignment of configured cards
with card individual information, e.g. for automatic
xml-example
LAx control or pump power level
List of transponder ports
List of channel states (express, add/drop, unused)
List of configured protection groups
List of port connections
List of cross-connections

Summary

Increased channel speed boosts capacity

• Beginning today: 40G per wavelength as
default
• 100GbE field trials and lab experiments
 commercially available in 2010

Agile photonic networking shortens lead times

• ROADM enabled LH networks
• Metro/regional networks become as agile as LH
• ROADM and PXC become standard offerings

OpEx reduction needs to catch up with CapEx decline

• Impressive decline of cost per bit/km has not been
matched by OpEx reduction
• Fully automated DWDM systems (plug & play) will
bring OpEx in line
