Pump cards
 Pump card (PL-1) may be required starting from a certain channel count e.g. with
channel upgrades. The pump card boost the output power of the amplifier card.

Optical signal

 Optional Raman amplifier (PRC) for high-loss spans

– Raman amplifier works in opposite signal direction
– It is very important for the Raman functionality that the attenuation close to the
Raman pump is low and that there are no reflections. Connectors must be
cleaned.

Hybrid amplification
To simplify network management, the Raman pump card (PRC-2) and either the inline amplifier
card (LABIC-1) or the pre-amplifier card (LABPC-1) can be logically combined into a single card
cluster , which offers the following:
 Combined LRBxC-1 (LABxC and PRC-2 card) supporting all features from LABxC-1 and
PRC-2
 Implementation of Raman padding or Raman pump power control by LABxC
 Cards have to be placed in adjacent slots (future plans to have LABxC controlled as single
card by the management system)

Compensating chromatic dispersion with DCFs

 DCMs as purely passive card

 DCF – Dispersion Compensating Fiber is fiber with negative dispersion
 Drawback: Insertion loss and time delay
 Tunable dispersion compensator for 40G DPSK (small range)

FBG
DCF is just additional inserted fiber with negative dispersion

Compensating chromatic dispersion with FBGs

 DCMs as purely passive card (Circulator, FBG, EPROM for card label data)
 Low insertion loss reduces overall amplifier loss
 Low time delay allows easier design for transient performance

Inherently low loss and time delay allow

to reduce amplifier power, thus cost; drawback: limitations for 40G

FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating)

 Piece of fiber with modulated refractive index = Bragg grating

 Light pulse is reflected in FBG
 Grating is engineered in a way that the different spectral components are reflected
at different spatial positions
 This results in different delay times for different spectral components

An FBGs provides tailored chromatic dispersion

Options for Dispersion Compensation
3 basic families of DCMs with 100% slope compensation:
• FBG for SMF (optimized for low loss of larger CD values)
• FBG for LEAF
• DCF for SMF (optimized for low loss of small CD values)
