Read the passage and complete the table below. Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND
NUMBERS from the passage for each answer.
Chlorine monoxide, which is produced by a similar series of reactions involving icy particles in
the stratosphere, is blamed for the springtime depletion of ozone above Antarctica. In 1991,
this depletion was as severe as in any year since the discovery of the ozone hole in the early
1980s, according to B. L. Johnson, T. Deshler and R. A. Thompson of the University of
Wyoming, Laramie. Balloon fights from McMurdo Station, which lies at 78 South, revealed
severe ozone depletion in October 1991 at altitudes between 12 and 20 kilometres, with a 93
percent loss of ozone between 17 and 18 kilometres (Geophysical Research Letters, Vol.19, p.
1105).
Check-up
Read the passage and complete the table below. Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND
NUMBERS from the passage for each answer.
The minimum amount of ozone above McMurdo, reached on 10 October 1991, was 146
Dobson units – almost exactly the same as the minimum reached in 1987 and 1990. The
figure for the column between 12 and 20 kilometres altitude was a record low of 18
Dobson units, representing a loss of 83 percent of the ozone in that layer.

II. TIPS
The World Commission on Water estimates that the demand for water will increase
by around 50% in the next 30 years. Moreover, around 4 billion people – one half of
the world’s population – will live in conditions of severe water stress, meaning they
will not have enough water for drinking and washing to stay healthy, by 2025.
The government of South Africa has been taking a tough approach to trees since it
became the first to treat water as a basic human right in 1998. Trees lose water
through evaporation (the technical term is transpiration) at twice the rate of grassland
or South Africa’s unique fynbos scrubland. In a scheme praised by the hydrologists,
the state penalizes forestry companies for preventing this water from reaching rivers
and underground aquifers.

You are going to read about a traveler and explorer called Patrick Malone. Look at the flow
chart. What type of information do you think you need for each gap?
PATRICK MALONE (PART 1)
Patrick Malone is a traveler, writer and broadcaster. He was born in 1968 in Basel,
Switzerland, where his British parents were working for a pharmaceutical company. His
family left Switzerland when he was twelve, and returned to their home in Britain. For the
next six years, Malone attended the local secondary school. He then went to Leeds
University to do a course in Human Geography. He wanted to become a town planner.
However, the only work he could find was a teacher at a local school.
Check-up 2
During his holidays and free time, he went walking, often covering very long
distances very quickly. On one occasion he walked the entire length of Britain, a
distance of over 1,400 kilometres, in less than a month. He enjoyed the experience
and the challenge so much that he started walking in different parts of the world,
usually in fairly remote areas away from major population centres. The people he
met and the experiences he had on these trips provided him with some excellent
material for his classes.
Check-up 2
It was during one trip that he met his old university tutor, Don Perkins. At the
time, Perkins was putting together a team of geographers and biologists for a
research trip to the Amazon, and asked Malone if he would like to go with them.
The expedition was for a whole year, and so he had to give up his job at the
school, but Malone did not hesitate to accept Perkins’ offer. He sold his car to
make some money, bought an airline ticket for Brazil and set off.
