Bedroom Standards
1. A minimum floor space per bed (or bunk) of 4 square metre (44 square feet) to be
provided e.g. 2 metres x 2 meters. This area will be calculated on the basis of the maximum
dimensions of the room divided by the number of bed bases in the room.

Bed bases will be totalled as below:

Bunk bed = 1

Single bed = 1

Double bed =2

The impact of furniture (lockers, bedside tables etc.) will not be considered in this
calculation.

2. A minimum ceiling height of 2 metres (6’7”). Sloping eaves or coombed ceilings are
acceptable.

0.75m (30”).

Kitchen Standards
1 )A minimum of 4 cooking rings to be provided. Where the total number of bed spaces

exceeds 32 an additional cooking ring is to be provided for every further 8 bed spaces,

up to the first 100 guests. Example below:

32 Beds 4 Cooking Rings

40 Beds 5 Cooking Rings

48 Beds 6 Cooking Rings

56 Beds 7 Cooking Rings

2)Kitchen should have effective ventilation and facilities which allow at least 20% of max
number of guest to make food at the same time.

3) dry food storage( cupboards ), waste disposal, hot/cold water, a sink, smoke alarm to be
provided.

Toilet Standards
1)At least 1 WC (flush or chemical) and washbasin must be provided either inside or

outside the building for every 20 guests.

2)The bathroom area should be well lit and ventilated.

3)Provision of hot and cold water.

4)Cloth hook, a shelf and electric razor point to be provided.
