CIRCLE

A circle is the set of all points that are equidistant

from a given point on the plane. The given point P
is called the center of the circle.

CIRCUMFERENCE The
circumference of
a circle is the
Circumference distance around
the circle
RADIUS
A radius is a segment from the center to any point
in the circle. What is the plural form for radius?

Radii

Radius P

CHORD A chord is a segment whose
endpoints lie on the
circle/circumference of the circle.
Chord
DIAMETER
A diameter is a line segment/chord that
connects two points on the circle and passes
through the center of the circle.

SECANT LINE
A secant line is a line that intersects the circle
at two points. A secant line contains a chord.
TANGENT LINE
A tangent line is a line that intersects the circle
at exactly one point. The point of intersection is
called the point of tangency.

Point T is the
point of tangency
Radius OB is Ʇ to chord CD.
Segment CX= 2x+7 and
segment XD = 3x-2. Find
CX, XD, and CD.
Solution:
CX = XD
2x + 7 = 3x-2
2x-3x = -2-7
-x = -9
x=9
Using Substitution
CX= 2x + 7
2(9) + 7 = 25
XD = 3x -2
= 3(9) – 2 = 25 Chord CD = 50

Chord CD = ?

An arc is a portion of a circle defined by two
endpoints.

CENTRAL ANGLE
A central angle is an angle whose vertex is the
center of the circle. Its sides contain two radii of
the circle.

Task: 100 pts.
 Draw the different parts of a circle.
 Label it.
 Give a brief description of each part.
 Long bond paper.
 Be neat, colorful and creative.
Extension Problems

Draw a circle with radius 4cm.

 What is the length of the diameter of the circle?
 How many sectors of 90° will fit inside the circle?
 Draw five radii inside your circle that are equally spaced out around
the circumference. Join up the ends of the radii to create a shape
inside your circle.
 What is the name of the shape that you have created inside your
circle?
 How long are the chords that are joining the radii together?
 How big is the angle of each sector?
 If you did the same as above with sectors of 45°, what shape would
you create inside your circle?
