Introduction
• Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy
workplace for their employees.
• Depending on the hazard or workplace conditions, it is
necessary to use the personal protective equipment (PPE)
properly.
• Because PPE, protects its user against any physical harm
or hazards that the workplace environment may present.
• All personal protective equipment should be safely
designed and constructed, and should be maintained in a
clean and reliable fashion. It should fit comfortably,
encouraging worker use.
What is Employee’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

Personal protective equipment,

commonly referred to as “PPE”, is
equipment worn to minimize
exposure to a variety of hazards.
Examples of PPE include such items
as gloves, foot and eye protection,
protective hearing devices (earplugs,
muffs) hard hats, respirators and full
body suits
TYPES OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

• EYE & FACE PROTECTION

• HEAD PROTECTION
• HAND AND ARM PROTECTION
• RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
• FOOT PROTECTION
• HEARING PROTECTION
• BODY PROTECTION
• ELECTRICAL PROTECTIVE DEVICES
EYE & FACE PROTECTION

Eye & face protection required when

employees are in areas where there is
exposure to eye and face hazards from
flying particles, molten metal, liquid
chemicals, acids, caustic liquids, chemical
gases or vapors or potentially injurious
light radiation etc.
Types of eye & face protection are,
• Spectacles
• Goggles
• Face shields
• Full-face piece respirators
HEAD PROTECTION

Head protection required when employees are in areas where

there is a potential for injury to the head from:
• Falling objects.
• Flying objects.
• Fixed object.
• Protruding material.
• High voltage equipment and work involving.
Types of Head Protection

There are three widely used types of head

protection that are,
• Industrial safety helmets (hard hats) which
are designed to protect against materials
falling from a height or swinging objects.
• Industrial scalp protectors (bump caps) which
are designed to protect from knocking against
stationary objects.
• Caps/hair nets which protect against
entanglement.
Hand and arm protection

Needed when work presents the

potential of causing hand injury from
physical, chemical, or radiation agents.
Hand and arm protection comes in a
variety of forms, such as,
• Gloves or gauntlets (leather, latex, nitrile,
plastic coated, chain mail, etc).
• Wrist cuff armlets (e.g. used in glass
cutting and handling).
Body protection

Body protection needed when work presents a

potential for contamination or injury to other parts of the
body such as legs, arms, back, chest.
Types of body protection includes,
• Overalls, aprons and coveralls (protection against
hazardous substances)
• Clothing for hot, cold or bad weather
• Clothing to protect against machinery
• High visibility (jackets, trousers and vests)
• Harnesses
• Life jackets.
FOOT PROTECTION

Foot protection Required when employees are

in areas where there is danger of foot injuries due
to falling and rolling objects, slip hazards or objects
piercing the sole, and where employees are
exposed to electrical hazards.
There are a number of types of safety footwear,
such as,
• Conductive footwear.
• Wellington boot.
• Anti-static and conductive footwear, these protect
against static electricity.
Hearing protection

• Hearing protectors are required to prevent noise

induced hearing loss.
• PPE for hearing protection is required for employees
who are exposed to noise levels equal to or greater
than 85 decibels averaged over an eight-hour
period.
• Hearing protection devices reduce the noise energy
reaching and causing damage to the inner ear.
• Ear muffs and earplugs are the most common types
of PPE.
Respiratory Protective Equipment

• Respiratory Protective Equipment is a particular type of PPE, used to

protect the individual wearer against the inhalation of hazardous
substances in the workplace air.
ELECTRICAL PROTECTIVE DEVICES

• The Types of Protection Devices That Prevents from Electrical

Damages are written below,
• Fuse
• Circuit Breaker
• Poly Switch
• RCCB
• Metal Oxide Varistor
• Inrush Current Limiter
• Gas Discharge Tube
• Lighting Arrester
OSHA PPE Standard

The standard requires employers to:

• Assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present

• Select and provide appropriate PPE that fits each affected employee
• Train employees on how to use PPE correctly
HAZARD ASSESSMENT

The employer must:

• Evaluate every job function
• Determine if hazards are present
• Check for hazards to all parts of the body
• Determine appropriate PPE
• Common hazards include chemical exposures,
falling or dropping objects, particulates,
temperature extremes, light radiation, moving
equipment and parts, sharp objects, etc.
Why do we need to check the condition of personal protective
equipment?

• PPE can lose its effectiveness or become damaged due to exposure to

grit, dirt, chemicals, UV light, misuse, or general wear and tear. That's
why regular inspections are essential for making sure that the PPE is
fit for its purpose, in date, and fully compliant.
PPE Cleaning and Care

• PPE must be kept clean and sanitary. Clean PPE with

mild soap and water . Some PPE may require special
cleaning, in these cases use the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
• If PPE is contaminated and cannot be
decontaminated safely, it may need disposed of in a
special manner to protect other employees from
exposure to the hazard. EHS shall be contacted.
• PPE shall be stored in such a way that it will not
become contaminated such as plastic bags, lockers,
closet, drawers.
PPE Maintenance and Repair

• Inspect PPE before and after each use.

• Take note of the lifespan of the PPE. Avoid using personal
protective equipment that has reached its lifespan .
• Do not use PPE if it is damaged and in need of repair.
• It is the responsibility of the employee to make their
supervisor aware as soon as PPE becomes damaged so
that new PPE can be obtained.
• Do not attempt to repair PPE.
• Always try to replace damaged or broken PPE.
• Store PPE in clean dry air - free from exposure to sunlight
or contaminants.
THE IMPOTANCE OF use the PPE

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, protects its user against any physical harm or
hazards that the workplace environment may present. Some other importance of PPE are
written below,
• It is important because it exists as a preventative measure for industries that are known to be
more hazardous, like manufacturing and mining.
• It keeps us from being liable for our own injuries.
• It's cheap than work damage.
• It's replaceable but our body is not.
• It protects our health from virus and bacteria as well.
• It increases the quality of our workday.
• It could save our life.
• It's the law.
Conclusion
• Employers must protect workers from health and safety risks.
Employers must do a risk assessment. Some hazards may still remain
after engineering controls and safe systems of work have been applied.
Employers must provide PPE free of charge if a risk assessment shows it
is needed. Every employee have to be use the PPE in the time of hazard
work.
