• Digestion is the process of
Breaking down food into Nutrients
that the body can use.
The primary functions of the gastrointestinal
system are:

• The digestion and absorption of food and its nutrients.

• Elimination of waste products.

The nutrients absorbed by the intestinal wall are

essential for the function of all body systems
and structures.
Digestion
Digestion begins in the oral cavity.
There are two parts to digestion (Turley, 2007)

alveoli and into the blood.
Internal Respiration
• Oxygen molecules enter the cells and are used to produce energy for
the cells. This process is also called metabolism.

• Carbon dioxide leaves the cells and enter the blood, travels back through
the heart and into the lungs where it is expelled.
Circulation
Heart: The heart pumps blood
through the arteries and the
pulmonary system

Arteries: Arteries and arterioles

carry oxygenated blood to all
body systems and structures.

Veins and Capillaries: Carry the

blood back to the heart.

Digestion
The nutrients absorbed by the intestinal wall are essential for the function of all body
systems and structures.

Respiration
Respiration brings oxygen into the body where it is transported to the cells and are used
to produce energy and to expel carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism.

Circulation
The circulatory system carries the oxygenated blood cells through out the body delivering
energy to all body systems and structures and carries carbaminohemoglobin back to the
lungs for expiration.
