Packet Sniffing & Its Process: Presented By: Anuj Upadhyay Aradhana Singh Arpit Yadav Ashutosh Gupta Ashutosh Ojha

Packet sniffing involves using network adapter software to capture all network packets, regardless of destination. It exploits protocols that do not encrypt traffic like usernames, passwords, emails and financial data. Packet sniffers must be on the same local network or router as the target traffic. Commercial sniffers monitor networks for problems while underground sniffers are used maliciously by hackers to steal confidential information by capturing traffic.

Packet Sniffing:

A packet sniffer is a software application that uses a network

adapter card in promiscuous mode to capture all network
packets. The following are the packet sniffer features:
Packet sniffers exploit information passed in clear text.
Protocols that pass information in the clear include the
following:
• Telnet
• FTP
• SNMP
• POP
Packet sniffers must be on the same collision domain.
Packet sniffing
 Meaning :

Packet sniffing is the practice of gathering, collecting, and logging

some or all packets that pass through a computer network,
regardless of how the packet is addressed.

The act of capturing data packet across the computer network is

called packet sniffing.
Types Of Sniffing Programs

 Commercial packet sniffers:

Commercial sniffers are used to maintain and monitor
information over the network. These sniffers are used to detect
network problems. Network General Corporation (NGC) is a
company that offers commercial sniffers.
These can be used for:

•  Fault analysis to detect problems in a network.

• Performance analysis to detect network bottlenecks.
 Underground packet sniffers:
Underground sniffers are malicious programs used by hackers to
capture information over a network when underground sniffers
are installed on the router, it can breach security of any network
that passes through the router.
It can capture:

•  Confidential messages like email.

• Financial data like debit card details.
Uses Of Packet Sniffers:

 Capturing clear-text usernames and passwords

 Capturing and replying voice over IP telephone conversations
 Mapping a network
 Conversion of network traffic into human readable form
 Breaking into a target computer and installing remotely
controlled sniffing software
