PLIOTEC LEB20
› Summary
LEB20
Key advantages:
• Excellent surfactant leaching resistance with Low Exudation Binder (LEB) Technology
• Outstanding color retention associated with strong dirt pick-up resistance
• Superior early rain resistance
• Strong efflorescence resistance
• Low VOC and APEO-free
Physical properties of water are dramatically different from those of other solvent used in coatings
• Evaporation rate is highly dependent on temperature and relative humidity
Application conditions are controlled by “mother nature”
• Ideal conditions window is typically 40 to 65% RH and 50°F to 90°F
• Due to job completion pressure or fast changing conditions, range of temperature and humidity conditions is most of the
time extended
Water based coatings contain water-soluble raw materials that affect water resistance
• Surfactant from binder used to emulsify monomer micelles in the first step of emulsion polymerization process
• Wetting and dispersing additives
• Pre-dispersed colorants, the preferred choice today for tinting of decorative and architectural paints
• Tendency to congregate, leading to hydrophilic zones that enhance water absorption and migration
Key benefits:
• Surfactant leaching resistance
• Color retention
• Early rain resistance
• Efflorescence resistance
Exudates from water-borne formulation based on standard acrylic binder and Pliotec LEB 20 were analyzed by
pyrolysis/GC-MS
Complexity of paint formulation complicates identification of each ingredient, but more academic study permits species
to be associated with raw materials
Fewer peaks and better prevention of chemical species to exude linked to “fishing net” structure of Pliotec LEB 20
• Analytical study is continuing in an effort to generate in-depth characterization of the mechanism
• Results of this research will form the basis of a future technical paper
• Possibility to use a single product for primer and top-coat could be of interest
Decoration
• Trend toward deep colors: growth in DIY and Trade markets
• Intensification of “Point of Sale” tinting machine
• Benefits: Quick tint preparation, tailor made color, low stock of tinting paint
• Drawbacks leading to exudation and efflorescence issues
• More water sensitive materials to improve compatibility with colorants
• 0 VOC colorants: higher amount of water-soluble components

Test Method
• Apply paint by brush to exterior of plastic cans (250 sq. ft. per US
gallon)
• After 16 hours of drying, cans filled with water and ice (39°F)
• Cans placed in a climatic chamber at 77°F and 90% relative
humidity for a period of 90 min.
• Leachate collected in a cup positioned below the can
• Degree of leaching is measured weighing the exudate after 4.5
hours at 140°F (expressed in percentage per paint applied)
Sample Preparation
• White Bases: tested in white, and with 2 phthalocyanine blue universal colorants at 2 oz/gal
• Deep Bases: tested with 3 phthalocyanine blue universal colorants at 14 oz/gal
Design of Pliotec LEB 20 polymer: resistance to exudation exceeding that of conventional technologies
• White Bases
• With no added colorant: exudation is divided by a factor of three
• Addition of a colorant increases the exudation to a lesser extent in formulations based on Pliotec LEB 20
• Deep Bases
• Exudation can be very important (up to 7%): high risk of exudation issues with deep colors
• LEB technology allows to divide the quantity of exudate by a factor of two or three
Test Method
• Application in 2 coats by brush (with 24 h between
coats) to porous clay bricks, leaving a few centimeters
at the bottom uncoated
• After 24 h of drying, the bricks are placed in a
saturated salt solution for 3 weeks, adding water or
salt to the solution from time to time to ensure that the
level remains constant
• Changes in film appearance (blisters, salt deposits,
cracking, etc.) are observed
• Efflorescence resistance is rated from 3 (excellent
Example of porous clay brick Bricks at the beginning of the test
efflorescence resistance) to 0 (poor efflorescence
resistance)
The formulations based on Pliotec LEB 20 demonstrate efflorescence resistance superior to that of
conventional water-based binders

Shower Resistance
› Test Method
Test Method
• Apply primer at 250 g/m2 to fiber cement panels. Drying
24 h at ambient temperature.
• Condition in a controlled climatic chamber at 3°C / 90%
RH for 30 minutes.
• Apply paint at 300 g/m2 and dry for 30 min at 3°C / 90%
RH in controlled climatic chamber.
• Panels exposed to shower test during 3 minutes.
• Visually assess panels for paint removal.
Paints visually assessed after 3 min. of shower test, after 30 min. of drying in severe climatic conditions (37°F, 90% RH)
• Conditions more differentiating than shorter drying time with climatic conditions closer to the “ideal” ranges
• Aim is to test the wash-out resistance when film dries in conditions that were not expected to occur when paint was applied
• To obtain a substrate with even porosity, a masonry primer (tinted in light blue) is applied on the fiber cement panels
The early water resistance demonstrated by Pliotec LEB 20 in the White Base is achieved thanks to
robust coalescence and film hydrophobicity developed during early stages of drying

Shower Resistance
› Benchmarking Study - Results
Paints visually assessed after 3 min. of shower test, after 30 min. of drying in severe climatic conditions (37°F, 90% RH)

In Deep Base formulations, when a high level of colorant is added (close to 10% by weight) the benefit of
Pliotec LEB 20 is even more obvious

Adhesion
› Adhesion to Non-porous substrates
ASTM D3359
• Application at 6 mils wet film thickness and drying at 73°F (23°C) and 50% relative humidity
• Materials that can be typically found on exterior buildings have been selected
Results/Comments
• White Bases: only product #1 exhibits some limitations on steel and PVC
• Deep Bases: colorant B demonstrates the negative impact of a high addition level on adhesion properties
• Strength of adhesion of the LEB technology is demonstrated by the performance obtained with the most critical tinting pastes.
Internal Method
• Application in 2 coats by brush at 200 sq.ft./gal. on beech panel
(6.0 x 2.4 x 0.4 in.)
• Three days of drying
• 20 cycles of ageing performed as following:
• 4 hrs at room temperature
• 3 hrs at 122°F (50°C)
• 1 hr of immersion in water
• 16 hrs at -4°F (-20°C)
• At the end of each cycle, the panel is weighed to determine the
quantity of water penetrating the wood through the paint film,
and a visual inspection is carried out.
Pass Fail
White Base
• Fast weight increase on product #5 after 5 cycles, due to water absorption in the wood.
• On product #2, wood swelling stays below a critical limit, and the film resists deformation: in the longer term, the same defect as is
evidenced in paint #3 could probably occur.
• The White Bases #1 and LEB White 2 pass the test without significant weight change (a small decrease due to the wash-out loss).
Deep Base
• The paint #6 and the LEB Deep 2 exhibit high water resistance, despite the severe aging conditions. The presence of colorant in
high quantity does not really have a significant impact on performance of these formulations
A new pure acrylic latex, Pliotec LEB 20, has been designed based on OMNOVA Solutions
proprietary LEB technology platform.
It provides outstanding exudation and efflorescence resistance to exterior paints, with very low
VOC content.
Extensive analysis of exudates has shown that the LEB platform reduces the quantity of exudate
from the paint film.
Comparative studies have demonstrated excellent performance of Pliotec LEB 20 in Exterior Flat
Paint formulations, especially for deeply tinted products. The excellent adhesion properties,
flexibility and weatherabilty of the binder provides long term protection on a wide range of
substrates.
Pliotec LEB 20 latex minimizes many of the common problems associated with the application of
water based exterior paints, in particular problems such as resistance to early rain and exudation
of water soluble components.
This technology provides a new level of performance in “All Weather” water-based paint.
