Types of Soil: Sandy Soil Loamy Soil Clayey Soil

The document describes three main types of soil: sandy soil which is porous and dries quickly; clayey soil which packs tightly and can hold more water than sandy soil but has less air; and loamy soil which is a mixture of sand, clay and silt particles and contains humus, giving it good water retention for plant growth.

Types of soil

• Sandy soil
• Loamy soil
• Clayey soil
Sandy soil

 The composition of sand is relatively higher than the fine soil.

 The soil is porous.
 Water can enter easily in this soil
 Such soil becomes dry soon after we pour water.
 Contains less humus.
 Well aerated.
Clayey soil

 The fine soil composition is relatively higher

 Clay particles, being much smaller, pack tightly together, leaving little space for air.
 Unlike sandy soil, water can be held in the tiny gaps between the particles of clay.
 So clayey soils have less air. But they are heavy as they hold more water than the sandy
soils.
Loamy soil

 Loamy soil is a mixture of sand, clay and another type of soil particle known as silt.
 Silt occurs as a deposit in river beds.
 The size of the silt particles is between those of sand and clay.
 The loamy soil also has humus in it
 It has the right water holding capacity for the growth of plants.
