Introduction To Big Data: Hamed Abdelhaq

Big data refers to extremely large data sets that are analyzed computationally to reveal patterns. It comes from both machine and human-generated sources. Every minute, millions of tweets, messages, searches and terabytes of data are created. Big data poses management issues due to its size, complexity and security needs. Tools are needed to analyze and process big data. Big data has applications in many industries like fast food, banking, retail, media and healthcare to improve operations, predict trends and detect anomalies.

INTRODUCTION TO BIG DATA

Hamed Abdelhaq
WHAT IS BIG DATA?

• extremely large data sets (structured and unstructured) that may be analyzed
computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating
to human behavior and interactions.
• Main two sources of Big Data:
1. Machine (computer generated)
• E.g.) App logs, surveillance data, imagery datasets
2. Human-generated data
• E.g.) microblogs, blogs, reviews etc
SOME STATISTICS – BIG DATA

• Every 60 seconds, we have:

• 98000+ tweets
• 695,000 status updates
• 11 million instant messages
• 698,000 Google searches
• 1,820TB of Data created

PROBLEMS – BIG DATA

• Management Issues
• Adding new complexities in managing huge data, in particular, regarding security
aspects
• Storage Issues
• Increase storage required => increase cost
• Processing Issues
• Needs times
• Needs resources + tools
BIG DATA PROCESSING TOOLS

• We needs some tools to analyze and process big data:

APPLICATION OF BIG DATA

• Fast-Food Industry
• McDonald’s, KFC, and Pizzahut taking help from big data to remain at the top
• database containing demographic, interest, and behavior to update food menu
• predict the number of food lovers at the specific time of the day
• design the marketing strategy and follow trends
• the location of new offices to be opened to increase profit
APPLICATION OF BIG DATA

• Banking Sector
• predict the amount of cash needed to be present in a branch at the specific time of
every year
• machine learning and AI are being used by many banks to detect fraudulent activities

• Restaurants
• data mining is used to find hidden patterns and similarities that help the restaurants to
determine their potential customers.
• image processing and machine learning identify the most wanted place in restaurants.
Restaurant owners then can highlight the area for marketing purpose.
APPLICATION OF BIG DATA

• Media & Entertainment

• Big data is can be used to identify the reason behind subscription and unsubscription
• artist can choose the placement where he wants to promote his performance
• identifying the most effective time to view data for analysis
• Tourism
• gather the information of public demand by analyzing the data travelers provide on
social media
• airlines can plan effectively by the data of passengers and their luggage throughout the
journey and provide services accordingly
• based on the information of Geo-location, traffic, and weather, travel agencies can
send offers and benefits suitable for particular customers.
APPLICATION OF BIG DATA

• Healthcare
• Big data can evaluate symptoms and identify many diseases at early stages
• Big data applications can also foretell the location where, e.g., there is a chance of
malaria spreading.
• Ecommerce
• Ecommerce owners can identify the most viewed products
• evaluates customers behavior and suggests similar products
• If any product is added to cart but was not ultimately bought by a customer, big data
applications can automatically send a promotional offer to that particular customer
APPLICATION OF BIG DATA

• Disaster Management
• identify the potential disasters by evaluating temperature, water level, wind pressure,
and other related factors
• the government can take necessary actions to reduce the adverse effects of natural
disasters.
• Actions like excavations can be done before the flood attacks.
• earthquakes can be brought under the monitor of natural disaster management
specialists, and they can warn people as well.
APPLICATION OF BIG DATA

• Agriculture
• Can automate the watering system of the firm.
• take data from the past years and can suggest the pesticides that work best under
certain conditions.
• Education
• Big data can make sure if the question papers do not get leaked before the
examinations.
• Using high-resolution cameras, video footage and image processing, big data can
evaluate student’s facial expression and can track their movements.
• Motivates students by identifying problems and rendering the best possible education
to the children.
