ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION & ITS TYPES

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
3

Environmental pollution
is defined as "the
contamination of the
physical and biological
components of the
earth/atmosphere
system to such an extent
that normal
environmental processes
are adversely affected."

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION & ITS TYPES
AIR POLLUTION
5

Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases

in the air. Car emissions, chemicals from factories,
dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as
particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air
pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution,
it's also called smog.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION & ITS TYPES

WATER POLLUTION
6

Sources of water pollution

Water pollution occurs

when harmful substances—
often chemicals or
microorganisms—
contaminate a stream, river,
lake, ocean, aquifer, or
other body of water,
degrading water quality and
rendering it toxic to
humans or the environment

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION & ITS TYPES

LAND POLLUTION
7

Land pollution, the deposition of solid or liquid waste

materials on land or underground in a manner that can
contaminate the soil and groundwater, threaten public
health, and cause unsightly conditions and nuisances.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION & ITS TYPES

NOISE POLLUTION
8

Noise pollution is generally defined as regular

exposure to elevated sound levels that may lead to
adverse effects in humans or other living organisms.
According to the World Health Organization, sound
levels less than 70 dB are not damaging to living
organisms, regardless of how long or consistent the
exposure is.

IMPORTANCE OF PLANTS
9

 Plants are really important

for the planet and for all
living things.
 Plants absorb carbon
dioxide and release oxygen
from their leaves, which
humans and other animals
need to breathe.
 Living things need plants to
live - they eat them and live
in them. Plants help to clean
water too.

NEED OF PLANTS
10

 Food: Plants are the main

source of our food. ...
 Medicines: Many medicines
are made from plants and
these plants are called
medicinal plants. ...
 Paper: Bamboo, eucalyptus,
etc. ...
 Rubber: Some plants give us
gum like acacia, etc. ...
 Wood: We get timber and fire-
wood from trees. ...
 Cotton: We get cotton from
cotton plants.

EFFECTS OF CUTTING PLANTS
11

Large scale tree cutting can lead to deforestation, a

transformation of an area from forest to terrain with
little vegetation. Plants create oxygen and absorb
greenhouse gases. The destruction of trees may,
therefore, encourage global warming. Changing
temperatures can alter which organisms can survive
in an ecosystem.
