Structure

of a media
sector
Introduction
In this power point I will be comparing the structure of two
different companies in the media sector. I have chosen to look at
Disney and BBC because Disney is a modern type of company,
and I will be comparing it to another company of a different
target audience.
I will be comparing these companies to find out both their
similarities and differences throughout this power point.
Structure of Disney
The structure of walt Disney company is a hierarchical and
multidivisional structure meaning every division and section
within the organization expect for one, are subordinate to a single
other entity.

This is because the company has one CEO who oversees the
company and underneath would be the division of the walt
Disney company. The main ones would be walt Disney
attractions, walt Disney studios and consumer products section.
Structure of bbc
The BBC organizational structure consists of the Board of the Governor, the
Executive Board, the Creative Board, the Journalism Board, and the Commercial
Board. The Creative Board, the Journalism Board, and the Commercial Board all
report to the Executive Board. The Executive Board reports to the Board of
Governors.
BBC or the British Broadcasting Corporation is England’s Public Service
Broadcaster and it headquarter is located in London at the Broadcasting House. It
is the oldest national Broadcasting Corporation of the world, and the largest with
reference to the employees too. The BBC was established under a Royal Charter,
where an agreement is made with Secretary of State for Culture, Media and
Sports, and functions according to it. One of its functional business divisions is
the BBC news, which collects and disseminates news and information in general.
The current Royal Charter under which the BBC is functioning, came in effect
from 2007 and shall expire at the end of 2016. The Charter clearly speaks about
the editorial independence of BBC.
Private or public?
The walt Disney company is a private company. This is
because they don’t have shares that can be traded on a stock
market which is why it is not a public company as shares
cannot be offered to the public for sales.
Being public means that they may issue stock and have
shareholders, but their shares do not trade, however on some
ways they have the qualities.

Bbc is a largescale public broadcasting company that provides

information, education, and entertainment to the public.
This is because a public company, also called a publicly traded
company, is a corporation whose shareholders have a claim to
part of the company's assets and profits.
Larger conglomerate?
Walt Disney is the third largest conglomerate in the world.
This means that they have larger companies which are made
up of smaller independent companies that may operate
across multiple industries. They have branches in
film ,music, publication and more. They are part of a
conglomerate because other than the company owning many
other companies, they also have other things such as
attractions, shops and television stations such as ABCA and
also have other companies such as GoPro.
What media products do they make?
Disney operate in theme parks, tv shows, films and games. Although they own walt
Disney studios they also own marvel entertainment, Pixar, Disney xd, Disney junior and
many more studios. They also own television companies which are ABC, National
geographic and many others.  they also specialize in making games such as online
Disney games for both kids and adults to play on the Disney games website which
include 545 different games the audience can interact with. This part of Disney is called
Interactive Studios.
What the BBC do
• In the UK the BBC own and run UKTV, a popular and successful
network of commercial channels. They offer different tv channels to
different countries which is a way they make revenue.
• The main purpose they do is to create different channels which are
promoting different shows to the audience along with promoting
adverts. Doing this they are being paid to promote other
companies shows and advertisements.
Are they horizontally or
vertically integrated?
Horizontal integration is the process of a company increasing production of
goods or services at the same part of the supply chain.

Vertical integration is when disney has to produce, market, distribute and create
merchandise for their product, a product that disney produced in their studios,
marketed on their channels which is why they could be viewed as a vertically
integrated company.

The BBC is horizontally integrated because they have businesses that go down,

but the BBC still carries on as a brilliant organization. This is because
vertically integrated means that if one part of the business goes down, the
whole organization falls apart. Also, different parts of a business come under
others involved in the production.
Probability and Revenue
• Disney is a big company that are able to gain part of their revenue
through commercial advertisement through different networks along
with their theme parks. They have 12 theme parks where they have
made $13.611 billion from this.
• There revenue is made from these them parks they own along with the
stores and euro Disney division.

• Around a quarter of BBC's revenue comes from its commercial

subsidiary BBC Studios which sells BBC programmer and services
internationally and also distributes the BBC's international 24-hour
English-language news services BBC World News, and from
BBC.com, provided by BBC Global News Ltd. This is how the BBC
get their revenue.
