A SMART IoT SYSTEM FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT

This document describes a proposed smart IoT system for public transportation that would: - Use Bluetooth beacons on buses and IoT gateways at bus stops to track bus locations in real-time. - Provide travelers with real-time arrival information via smartphones and displays at bus stops to reduce wait times. - Store tracking data on the cloud for analytics and match beacon IDs to bus schedule databases to generate notifications. The goals are to explore wireless technologies to connect buses, stops and users, develop user interfaces for real-time transit data, and assist people with special needs in using public transit independently. The system is expected to be customizable, low power, and able to handle multiple buses simultaneously

PROBLEM
IDENTIFIED

With the increase in population, rapid explode in rate of vehicles has resulted
in an overload on traffic management. Public transportation, being a pivotal
role, is the most affordable means of transportation. The major impediment
of traveling with bus is the inconsistent arrival time which may be due to
unforeseen circumstances. Even though bus schedule is known, there are a
number of reasons that bus may not arrive as expected. Traffic congestion,
heavy downpour, bus breakdown, accident and day-to-day problems faced by
bus company can delay or completely interrupt bus service.
PROPOSED SOLUTION
 Thus, all the discussed shortcomings have given the intuition of
developing an IoT enabled system that will inform the travelers prior
about the bus arrival time, facilitating passengers to plan trips accordingly
with minimum wait time.
 The integration of the IoT technology and Transit System with appropriate
communication technologies such as wireless low signals of Bluetooth
better fits the solution.
 In our system, users can access real-time passenger information such as
schedules, trip planners, bus capacity estimates and bus stop locations, via
Smartphone, on computers and at bus stops. This system would be
inclusive to all users including people with special needs.

OBJECTIVES

 To explore wireless technologies to connect buses, bus stops and

users;
 To propose buses and bus stop infrastructure to support the desired
functionalities;
 To develop user-friendly interfaces for accessing real-time transit
data;
 To assist people with special needs in travelling independently by
public transit systems.
MAJOR STEPS:
 Raspberry Pi is programmed such that it continuously scans for
Bluetooth Low Energy devices.
 If device is found, the corresponding SSID of beacon is fetched.
 The SSID obtained is then matched with the database stored on
cloud. This database consists of all information related to bus route,
arrival timings at respective stops, bus route etc.
 After validation from database a notification is generated at the bus
stop through speakers and in user’s mobile device simultaneously.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
Implementation of the system should be highly customizable
and provides low-latency support. As, BLE consumes very
less power and enables system to handle multiple buses at a
given time increasing the robustness of system.
