Feedback Connection Types

The document discusses four types of feedback connections in amplifier circuits: 1. Voltage-series feedback feeds back a fraction of the output voltage in series with the input voltage. 2. Voltage-shunt feedback feeds back a fraction of the output voltage in parallel with the input voltage. 3. Current-series feedback feeds back a fraction of the output current in series with the input voltage. 4. Current-shunt feedback feeds back a fraction of the output current in parallel with the input voltage. It then provides details on how each type of feedback connection affects the gain, input impedance, and output impedance of the amplifier circuit.

FEEDBACK CONNECTION
TYPES :
There are four basic ways of connecting the feedback signal. Both
voltage and current can be fed back to the input either in series or
parallel. Specifically, there can be :
1. Voltage-series feedback
2. Voltage-shunt feedback
3. Current-series feedback
4. Current-shunt feedback
In the list above, voltage refers to connecting the output voltage as
input to the feedback network: current refers to tapping off some
output current through the feedback network.
Series refers to connecting the feedback signal in series with the input
signal voltage: shunt refers to connecting the feedback signal in shunt
(parallel) with an input current source.
VOLTAGE-SERIES FEEDBACK

In the voltage series feedback circuit, a fraction of the

output voltage fed back in series with the input voltage
through the feedback circuit. This is also known as
shunt-driven series-fed feedback, i.e., a parallel-series
circuit.
VOLTAGE-SHUNT FEEDBACK

In the voltage shunt feedback circuit, a fraction of the

output voltage is applied in parallel with the input
voltage through the feedback network. This is also
known as shunt-driven shunt-fed feedback i.e., a
parallel-parallel
CURRENT-SERIES FEEDBACK

In the current series feedback circuit, a fraction of the

output voltage is applied in series with the input
voltage through the feedback circuit. This is also
known as series-driven series-fed feedback i.e., a
series-series circuit.
CURRENT-SHUNT FEEDBACK

In the current shunt feedback circuit, a fraction of the

output voltage is applied in parallel with the input
voltage through the feedback circuit. This is also
known as series-driven shunt-fed feedback i.e., a
series-parallel circuit.
GAIN WITH VOLTAGE-SERIES FEEDBACK

If there is no feedback (i.e. V=0), the voltage of the

f

amplifier is
A = VO / VS = VO / Vi
f

If a feedback signal, Vis connected in series with

f

the input, then

Vi  VS  VF
Since, V  AV  A(V - V )  AV - A(V )
O i s f s o

Then (1   A)V  AV o s
so that the overall voltage gain with feedback is

Above equation shows that the gain with feedback is the

amplifier gain reduced by the factor (1   A) .

INPUT IMPEDENCE
The input impedance of voltage series feedback can be determined as follows:
Ii  V/Zi  (VS  Vf ) / Zi  (VS  Vo ) / Zi  (VS   AV i ) / Zi
Vs  IiZi   AV i  IiZi   AIiZi

The input impedance with series feedback is seen to be the value of the input
impedance without feedback multiplied by the factor (1  A) .
OUTPUT IMPEDENCE

The output impedance is determined by applying a voltage, V, resulting in a current, I, with

VS out ( =0).VThe
shorted S voltage V is then

V  IZo  AV i
For VS =0, Vi   Vf

V  IZo  AV f  IZo  A V
solving above equation for the output resistance with feedback, we get:
