1 Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Building Workshops, students shall be able to: -

 Perform the procedures and good practices of building


brickwalls;

 Perform the procedures and good practices of preparing mortar,


plastering, jointing and pointing; and

 Perform the procedures and good practices of wall and floor tiling.
Tasks
Students will be divided into groups as assigned by the lecturer in-
charge of Building Workshop. Students are required to attend the Building
Workshop as per scheduled and to undertake tasks according to
workshop practice sheet: -
Building Workshop 1:
 Brickwork – half-brick wall in Stretcher bond (4 bricks long x 4
courses high)
 Plastering – undercoat on brickwall

Building Workshop 2:
 Brickwork – one-brick wall in English bond (4 bricks long x 4 courses
high)
 Jointing & pointing

Building Workshop 3:
 Ceramic wall tiling, 4” x 4” wall tiles (3 x 3 pieces)
 Ceramic floor tiling, 6” x 6” floor tiles (4 x 4 pieces)

Students will be assessed on their performance during workshop
practice.

After completing each workshop practice, students are required to prepare the
workshop report in group for submission on subsequent
workshop practice to lecturer in-charged for marking and feedback.
The contents of each workshop report shall include the following: -

 Objective of the workshop;

 Workshop materials and tools;

State, with the aid of annotateddiagrams (photos/sketches), the relevant


materials and tools used in each workshop.

The contents of each workshop report shall include the following: -

 Workshop procedures;

Describe, with the aid of annotated diagrams (photos/sketches), the step-


by-step procedures of work in each workshop.
1) Get ready materials….
2) Mix mortar….
3) Laying brick…. Check level….
4) Etc……
The contents of each workshop report shall include the following: -

 Workshop results;

Present, with the aid of annotated photos, the completed work in


each workshop.

 Discussions;

 Conclusions; and

 References.
Submission

The workshop report shall be properly typed in font size 12 of Times New
Roman.

The length of report, including texts and figures, shall not exceed 10
pages. Additional pages of report will not be considered for marking.

All figures shall be properly labelled, titled and referred to inside the texts.

Such report shall have proper


citations and list of references in
accordance to Harvard referencing system.

Students are required to fill


in the assessment record provided and
stapler it as the front cover of report for submission.
Assessment Criteria
Generally, marking will be based on the following criteria: -

Workshop Practice
Quality of work (5 marks)
Housekeeping & cleanliness (5 marks)

Workshop Report
Formats of report (5 marks)
Contents of report (5 marks)
Referencing (5 marks)
[Total = 25 marks]

Each workshop report carries 25 marks and the average marks of all workshop reports
will contribute 25 marks towards the coursework marks.
