Information System Development Cycle

The document summarizes the system development life cycle (SDLC) process. It describes the typical phases of SDLC as system investigation, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance. The system investigation phase involves feasibility studies. System analysis defines functional requirements. System design specifies the technical solution. Implementation makes the system operational. Maintenance improves the existing system. Prototyping allows for faster development by testing models early.

System Development life cycle is the development of

an information system. It is also known as information

system development cycle. There are different steps
involved in the SDLC. However, all the activities are
highly related and interdependent. Therefore, in
actual practice, several developmental activities can
occur at the same time, which are different in the
SDLC or many times previous phases can be repeat.
The different phases of SDLC are:
1. System Investigation -----Feasibility Study
2. System Analysis --------Functional Requirements
3. System Design -----------System Specifications
4. System Implementation -----Operational System
5. System Maintenance ----------- Improved System

 Prototyping is the rapid development and testing
of working models. Prototyping, as a development
tool, makes the development process faster and
easier, especially for projects where end user
requirements are hard to define. Prototyping has
also opened up the application development
process to end users because it simplifies and
accelerates system design .
Usually, a prototype is modified several
times before end users find it acceptable.
 Investigation stage is the first step of SDLC. Here we
have to see the opportunities and priorities of the
business. How information system will give the
solution of our priorities. For these purpose we have to
do feasibility study before development of a system.
Some feasibility studies are:

1. Economic Feasibility Study

2. Technical Feasibility Study
3. Time Feasibility study
4. Management Feasibility Study
5. Legal Feasibility Study
6. Social Feasibility Study
7. Operational Feasibility Study
System analysis is the extension of feasibility study.
It is the in-depth study of functional requirements.
Here we will do the analysis of tangible &
intangible benefits.

Tangible Benefits Intangible Benefits

Increase in sales or profits Improved information availability
Decrease in inf. Processing costs Improved abilities in analysis
Decrease in operating costs Improved customer service
Decrease in required investment Improved employee morale
Increased operational efficiency Improved mgmt. decision making
Improved competitive position
Improved business image
If a person do not know about the organizational
environment, how he/she will be able to
develop the information system. That’s why
the members of a development team have to
know something about the organization, its
management structure, its people, its business
activities etc.
 Before designing new system, it is important to
study the system that will be improved or
replaced. We need to analyze how this system
uses hardware, software, network and people
resources to convert data resources such as
transaction data, into information products,
such as reports and displays. Then we must
document how the information system
activities of input, processing, output, storage
and control are accomplished.
In the analysis our main goal is to identify what
should be done not how to do it. Functional
Requirements are end user information
requirements that are not tied to the hardware,
software, network, data and people resources
that end users presently use or might use in the
new system.

Basically system analysis describes what a system

should do to meet the information needs of
users.
 System design specifies how the system will
accomplish this objective. Design gives us the
solution of the problem which has been
encountered during requirement analysis
phase. There are following two type of design:

 Logical Design
 Physical Design
 Software operations on client side is known as
Implementation. Sometimes user training comes under
implementation.

 System Maintenance:
System maintenance is the monitoring, evaluating of
operational business systems to make desirable or
necessary improvements. Maintenance is also
necessary for other failure and problems that arise
during the operation of the system. Errors in the
development or use of a system must be corrected by
the maintenance process. This includes a periodic
review of a system to ensure that it is operating
properly and meeting its objectives.
