Advanced Well Completions

Introduction

© The Robert Gordon University 2011 1

Course Objectives
• Introduce the topics relevant to advanced well
completion and flow line design

• Cover the relevant topics in sufficient detail to allow

the user to start undertaking preliminary design at a
higher level

• Carry out tutorials and exercises to illustrate the

application of the concepts presented in the material

What is Completion design ?

• It is the process of converting a drilling

wellbore into a production/injection system

• The resulting system establishes a safe,

efficient and effective connection between
the reservoir, the wellbore up to surface so
hydrocarbons can be produced

Objectives of a completion
• To establish a safe, efficient and effective connection and
transport between the reservoir and surface

• Completion objectives are influenced by:

− Purpose/use of the well (producer, injector..)

− Environmental constraints (regulation, location..)
− Drilling results (casing sizes, depth, deviation..)
− Reservoir properties (pressure, temperature..)
− Operational issues (completion method, equipment..)

Completion design process
• Set objectives and design criteria
• Determine reservoir & well deliverability
• Carry out conceptual design
• Review design and strategy
• Carry out detailed design
• Planning and preparation (procurement..)
• Installation
• Evaluation

Summary
• Completions a safe and efficient link between the reservoir
and the production facilities
• Can be affected by regulation, environmental issues,
drilling, reservoir characteristics, well type…
• Design process is composed of:
• Objectives & design criteria

• Determine reservoir & well deliverability

• Conceptual design & strategy

• Detailed design, Planning, preparation (procurement..)

• Installation, Test & Evaluation

• It has two main elements: Upper & Lower completion
