Patterns and Algebra: Instructor: Kris Mellan M Sabiniano, MBA
This document discusses patterns and algebra. It defines patterns as repetitive sequences that can be found everywhere and explains that rules describe the process to find the next term. Examples of patterns include sequences of odd numbers, even numbers, multiples of a number, and factors of a number. The document also defines numerical expressions as expressions combining numbers and operations, algebraic expressions as using variables, and algebraic equations as having an equal sign showing two expressions are equal.

Patterns A sequence is a list of numbers or objects in a defined or logical order. Each number in a sequence is called a term. Patterns are repetitive sequences and can be found in nature, shapes, events, sets of numbers and almost everywhere you care to look. Rule is the process to find the next term in a sequence or manner. Patterns and rules will help us continue a given sequence of numbers, figures or to fill in missing numbers or symbols. Patterns To determine the missing term/s in a sequence of numbers, we can evaluate if it is: 1. A sequence of odd numbers 2. A sequence of even numbers 3. A sequence of multiples of a number 4. A sequence of factors of a number Patterns Examples: 1. 10, 12, __, 16, 20 2. 8, 16, 24, __, __, 48 3. 1, 3, 5, _, 9, __, 13 4. 48, __, 52, __, 56 Algebra A numerical expression is an expression that combines numbers and one or more operation symbols. Example: 5 +7 – 3 x 2 4x8-10 Algebra An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that uses variables, numerals, and operation symbols. A variable is any letter or symbol that represents a number.
An algebraic equation is a mathematical sentence with an equation sign (=) which
shoes that two expressions on other sides are equal. Algebra Identify if it is an expression or equation: 4x+5=0 30+7-9 Thank you!
