other than each undying love. And, willing to suffer even to
die just to prove his love.

• Began in colonial Philippines under Spanish
rule.

Jocelynang Baliwag – known as Kundiman
ng Himagsikan.
o There are two kinds of Jocelynang Baliwag
songs. One is written by the unknown composer
and the other one was discovered by Jose
Zulueta and with different lyrics (Dery 2003).
History of Kundiman
1900s
• Francisco Santiago and Nicanor Abelardo are the well-known composers of
Kundiman Art Song. These two composers trained and adapted the style of
western music and they apply it on their compositions.
• 1917 – It began to composed the first Kundiman Art Song. It was started by
Francisco Santiago known as the Father of Kundiman Art Songs then it was
followed by Nicanor Abelardo and other famous composers.
• “Anak Dalita” was the first Kundiman Art Song composed by Francisco
Santiago. In this song, the text is expressed that “being unloved is equivalent
to being poor and there is a glimmer of hope in each affection”.

• 1920 – “Madaling Araw” is one of the most considered beautiful Kundiman Art
Songs composed by Francisco Santiago.
This kundiman expresses the deep fashion for love.
• 1923 – Nicanor Abelardo Composed the “Nasaan Ka Irog ko”. This kundiman
talks about love and courtship. Abelardo composed and dedicate this kundiman
because he was inspired on his real-life childhood friend, Dr. Francisco Tecson.

harmony and characteristic markings such as pesante and doloroso.“
