What is It
To read and write numbers in words, we use the place value of the digits.

Read the number by period.
 Starting from the leftmost period, read the
3-digit number and followed by its period
except for the tens and ones unit.

10 736 → Ten thousand, seven hundred thirty – six


9 284 → Nine thousand, two hundred eighty – four
11 567 → Eleven thousand, five hundred sixty – seven
How to write number in figure given in word?
 To write a number in figure, we use the place value
also.
 Write the numbers by groups of threes using the
place value suggested by the digit and use zero as
place holder. Put a comma or a space to separate
periods.
Examples:
Seventy-seven thousand, eight hundred five → 77 805
Twenty-five thousand, nine hundred twelve → 25 912
Fifteen thousand, one → 15 001
Comparing Numbers:
Use the symbols > greater than, < less than, and =
equal to compare numbers. Starting from the highest
place value (leftmost), compare the digits of the
numbers in the same place value, until the digits are
not the same. Use zero (0) as placeholder.
Examples:

Round Numbers to the Nearest
Thousand and Ten Thousand
What’s New
Eymard is a numismatist because he loves to
collect coins. He was able to collect 2 429 of
different coins last year while 2 836 coins this
year. His friend ask him to estimate the coins
that he collected, and he answered
“about 2 000” coins last year, and “about 3
000” coins this year. How did he get the
answer 2 000 and 3 000?

Examples:
a. Round off 9 347 to the nearest thousand
b. Round off 36 478 to the nearest ten thousand

right of the rounding digit.
2. Determine if the digit to
the right of the rounding
digit is:
3 is less 6 is greater
a. less than 5 (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4) than 5 than 5
or
b. equal to or greater than 5
(6, 7, 8, 9)
3. If the digit to the right of the 9 347 36 478
rounding digit is:
a. less than 5, keep the rounding
digit and all the digits to the left
(round down); and 9 000 40 000
replace the digits to the right by
zeros;
b. greater than or equal to 5, keep
all the digits to the left of the
rounding digit; add one to the
rounding digit (round up); and
replace the digits to the right by
zeros. Note:
Regroup when necessary.

Increasing or Decreasing Order
Steps in Ordering Numbers from Increasing or
Decreasing Order
 Study and compare the digits of the given numbers
under the same place value from left to right,
 If the highest place value is not the same, the
numbers can be arranged in increasing or
decreasing order;
 But if the digits are the same, look at the next
higher place value.
 Then proceed in arranging the numbers in
increasing or decreasing order.
