Mechanical Vibration: Course Instructor: Dr. Massab Junaid

This document provides an overview of the Mechanical Vibration course ME 315. The course is taught by Dr. Massab Junaid and aims to help students understand mechanical vibrations, learn how to reduce or eliminate unwanted vibrations, and develop skills to efficiently produce vibrations when needed. Topics covered include free vibration, forced response to harmonic and general excitations, multiple degree of freedom systems, vibration isolation and suppression designs, and finite element methods. Assessment is based on quizzes, assignments, a complex engineering problem, midterm and final exams. Basic concepts introduced are vibration as oscillatory motion that repeats after an interval, and the differences between deterministic and random excitations.

Basic concepts of Vibration

Vibration:
Vibration is a mechanical phenomena whereby
regular oscillatory or periodic motion repeats
itself after a definite interval.

Oscillation:
Oscillation is the repetitive variation of some
measure about a central point.
