To be able to calculate mean,
median, mode and range
Add, divide, average, mean, median, mode, range,
middle, subtract
Starter
Put these numbers in order from smallest to largest
a) 8, 4, 6, 2, 9, 5, 3, 1
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9
b) 7, 4, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 8, 9
2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 7, 7, 8, 9
c) 3, 5, 0, 9, 6, 7, 1, 6
0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 6, 7, 9
d) 74, 96, 51, 63, 87, 99, 63, 80
51, 63, 63, 74, 80, 87, 96, 99
e) 0.2, 0.21, 0.02, 0.22, 2, 1.8
0.02, 0.2, 0.21, 0.22, 1.8, 2
Starter
Find the mode:
a) 3, 7, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7
b) 8, 3, 5, 7, 1, 8
c) 10, 12, 5, 1, 10, 5, 6
d) Dog, Cat, Dog, Cat, Cat
e) 22, -16, 5, 5, 22, -5, 22
Put the numbers in order from smallest to greatest.
a) 4, 2, 3, 6, 6, 2, 1
b) 0.1, 0.05, 4.2, 2, 30,
Range
The range is the difference between the
smallest and biggest numbers in a set of data.
Jade scored these results in the last 10 starters in her maths lesson:
3, 7, 1, 3, 4, 5, 2, 2, 5, 6
Biggest number Smallest number
So the difference between 1 and 7 is 6
Range = 6
The number of sandwiches sold in the canteen each day:
2, 5, 3, 1, 6, 7, 3
Smallest number Biggest number
So the difference between 1 and 7 is 6
Range = 6
Mode
The mode is the number that occurs most frequently.
Scores in a maths test:
10, 11, 9, 13, 12, 8, 10, 7, 9, 11, 10, 10
Which score is there the most?
Mode = 10
These are the ages of 15 people who go to an
afterschool club, what is the mode?
8, 6, 3, 7, 8, 5, 10, 7, 10, 8, 5, 11, 6, 4, 7
Which score is the most frequent?
Mode = 7 and 8
Median
The median is the middle value of a set of numbers
once the data has been ordered.
Gill takes 11 tests over a term. Here are his scores:
4, 8, 9, 3, 2, 10, 7, 8, 5, 9, 6
Put the scores in order
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10
Middle value Median = 7
Our football team scored these goals in their last matches:
4, 7, 0, 2, 4, 1, 2, 2, 5, 6
Put the numbers in order
0, 1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7
Two middle values Median = 3
When we have 2 numbers in the middle we add them up and
divide by 2 to find the median:
2+4=6÷2=3
Mean
To find the mean value of a set of data you add up all
the numbers then divide by however many numbers
there are.
Cakes sold each day:
4, 5, 2, 3, 1, 5, 4, 3, 1, 2,
Firstly, add up the numbers
4 + 5 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 1 + 2 = 30
Then
30 ÷ 10 (there are 10 numbers!) =3
Mean = 3
This data shows the ages of children who belong to a chess club:
10, 11, 9, 13, 12, 8, 10, 7, 9, 11, 10, 10
Add up the numbers
10 + 11 + 9 + 13 + 12 + 8 + 10 + 7 + 9 + 11 + 10 + 10
= 120
Then
120 ÷ 12 (there are 12 numbers!) =10
Mean = 10

Example: Steps for success
Range
5, 3, 4, 4, 4 • Biggest take smallest
Mode
Range: 5 – 1 = 4 • Most common
Mode: 4 Median
Median: 3, 4, 4, 4, 5 • Put the numbers in order
=4 • Find the middle number
Mean: 5 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20 Mean
20 ÷ 5 = 4 • Add them all together
• Divide by how many you
have got
