What are developmental milestones?

Developmental milestones are things most children can do

by a certain age.Skills such as taking a first step, smiling
for the first time, and waving “bye-bye” are called
developmental milestones. Children reach milestones in
how they play, learn, speak, act, and move.
Developmental milestones offer important
clues about a child’s developmental health.
Reaching milestones at the typical ages shows a child is
developing as expected. Reaching milestones much earlier
means a child may be advanced compared with his or her
peers of the same age.

Not reaching milestones or reaching them much later than

children the same age can be the earliest indication that a
child may have a developmental delay.
Developmental milestones fall into categories of
development called domains.

Social/Emotional:
This domain is about how children interact with others
and show emotion.

Language/Communication:
This domain is about how children express their needs
and share what they are thinking, as well as
understand what is said to them.
Cognitive (learning, thinking, problem-solving):
This domain is about how children learn new things and
solve problems. It includes how children explore their
environment to figure things out – whether by looking at
the world around them, putting objects in their mouths, or
dropping something to watch it fall.

Movement/Physical Development:
This domain is about how children use their bodies. It
includes many milestones parents excitedly wait for.
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES AGES
NEW BORN /0 AGE

From the moment babies are born,

they respond to the world around
them.Much of a newborn’s
movements and activity are reflexes or
involuntary the baby does not
purposefully make these movements.
As the nervous system begins to
mature, these reflexes give way to
purposeful behaviors.
Reflexes in newborns include the following:
Root reflex. This reflex occurs when the corner of the baby’s mouth is
stroked or touched.

Suck reflex. When the roof of the baby’s mouth is touched with the breast
or bottle nipple, the baby will begin to suck.

Moro reflex. The Moro reflex is often called a startle reflex because it
usually occurs when a baby is startled by a loud sound or movement.

Tonic neck reflex. When a baby’s head is turned to one side, the arm on that
side stretches out and the opposite arm bends up at the elbow.
Grasp reflex. With the grasp reflex, stroking the palm of a baby’s hand causes the
baby to close his or her fingers in a grasp.

Babinski reflex. With the Babinski reflex, when the sole of the foot is firmly
stroked, the big toe bends back toward the top of the foot and the other toes fan
out.

Step reflex. This reflex is also called the walking or dance reflex because a baby
appears to take steps or dance when held upright with his or her feet touching a
solid surface.

At this early age, crying is a baby’s only form of communication.
