How do you define Operations management?

• Operations management is chiefly

concerned with planning, organizing and
supervising in the contexts of production,
manufacturing or the provision of services.

• As such, it is delivery-focused, ensuring that

an organization successfully turns inputs to
outputs in an efficient manner.
Concept of two main important topics ***
• Operations – activities that make a product e.g ; all
activities that make up a registration of a postgraduate
course in UUM (OM =TP)

• Operations – takes a simple system approach (I-TP-O)

• Operations- all activities that form processes for instance,

publishing news in New Straits Times newspaper involve
processes starting from planning articles, searching
reporters, collecting stories, writing, editing, composing,
printing and selling to customer. All of these operations
must add value to the end product
Concept of two main important topics
• Operations Management- designs, operates and improve
productive system- system for getting work done

• For eg; the book you read is provided by people in the

operations (book production)
Activity
• Please provide one example of how operations are
managed in an organisation (either service or
manufacturing)

• Present briefly in the class

Concept of two main important topics
• Knowledge Management- organising an organisation’s
information and knowledge holistically
• KM- is a process of capturing, distributing, and effectively
using the knowledge (Davenport, 1994)
• What is the difference between information and
knowledge?
Concept of two main important topics
• Why KM is needed in managing business operations?

• What types of knowledge?

• How is the knowledge captured, distributed and effectively

used in managing operations?
Concept of two main important topics
**
Why KM is needed in managing business operations?
• In managing business operations, there are many
different information and knowledge acquired.
• The information and knowledge then distributed and
used to manage the operations effectively and efficiently
Concept of two main important topics
**
• To operate efficiently on a global scale, firms need more
timely and accurate data to make intelligent decision
• Sophisticated analytic packages that can make sense of
the data, provide summaries to management, and provide
interfaces that manages can easily use.
• With these systems, managers are able to see when
production bottleneck occur, understand how various
divisions can cooperate by sharing parts and designs,
respond to changes in demand and avoid excess
inventories
• The outcome is manager can make better decision
making
Concept of two main important topics
****
• What types of knowledge?
Knowledge related to input, transformation process and
output
• How is the knowledge captured, distributed and effectively
used in managing operations?
Knowledge and info is acquired, captured and stored in
database, then used in respective information system such
as purchasing and procurement system to assist company
in making decision on material suppliers
Operations activities

What are they? Can each of you provide ONE example on

operations activity?
Managing knowledge in operations
using technology
Technology in Operations Management :
• Hard technology refers to equipment and devices
that perform a variety of tasks in the creation and
delivery of goods and services.
• Soft technology is the application of the Internet,
computer software, and information systems to provide
data, information, and analysis and to facilitate the
accomplishment of creating and delivering goods and
services.
Managing knowledge in operations using
technology
• Types of technology :
a. Manufacturing technology
Many manufacturing industries used specialized
technology eg CAD

b. Service technology
E-service refers to using the Internet and technology to
provide services that create and deliver time, place,
information, entertainment, and exchange value to
customers and/or support the sale of goods.
Managing knowledge in operations using
technology
• Business operating environment becoming complicated.
Businesses are not operating alone. They operated under
a networked of companies/entities for instance, a company
that produces cake has connection with other company
that serve as raw material suppliers.

• The networked of companies are known as value chain.

The companies in the chain are known as actors

operations, which have been facilitated by ICT
• Multidiscipline collaboration of plant
operations such as the system, that captured
knowledge and information, can be accessed
by multi functional area such as finance,
marketing, HR and production/operations
department to help them in decision making
Benefits and Challenges of Technology

Benefits Challenges
• Shorten development • Difficulty to handle
time technology unless having
• Increase efficiency and adequate knowledge
effectiveness • High investment to

• Faster communication acquire the technology

and develop
and feedback
infrastructure
• Increase productivity
• Development human
resource through training
on the technology
