The document discusses pneumatics and hydraulics. Pneumatics uses compressed air to produce mechanical motion, while hydraulics uses pressurized liquids. Both have advantages like durability and power transmission, and disadvantages like potential leaks and safety issues.

Pneumatics
• Pneumatic use pressurized gases to produce
mechanical motion • By controlling the release of the pressurized gas, it can be turned into movement • Commonly uses compressed air Examples • Car Production line • Jack Hammer • Air Starting for Ship Engines • Air for balls and tires • Door opening for Busses Components • Components that produce and transport compressed air • Compressor • Pressure Regulator
• Components that consume compressed air
• Execution components(Cylinders), Directional control valves How it work • Two Simple Pneumatic systems • Single and double acting cylinders Single Acting Cylinder • When air pressure is removed, the spring will return back to resting position Double acting cylinder • Has two compressed air ports Advantages of Pneumatics • High Effectiveness – Unlimited of air , easy to transport, easily released • High Durability and reliability-Pneumatic components extremely durable, cant’t be damaged easily. • Simple Design – Simple design arrangement • High Adaptability to harsh environment – compressed air is less affected by high temperature, dust and corrosion. Disadvantages • Relatively low accuracy – Volume of air may change compressed or heated • Low loading- Due to the size of the pneumatics system they can’t drive loads that are too heavy • Processing required before use- compressed air must be processed before hand to ensure the absence of water, vapour and dust • Uneven moving speed – air can be easily compressed, the moving speeds of the piston are relatively uneven • Noise – produces noise when compressed is released Hydraulics • Hydraulics deal with the mechanical properties of liquids • At basic level hydraulics can be seen as the liquid version of pneumatics • It can be used for the generation, control and transmission of power by the use of pressurized liquids Hydraulic Uses • Hydraulics have many uses • Car Brakes – Braking • Air Plane – Adjusting of wings and putting out lander gear • Ship – Adjustment of bow thruster, opening of cargo haul. • Heavy machinery – big machines that require a lot of power. How it work • Hydraulics work by applying a force at one point and transmitting it to another point using an incompressible fluid. • Fluid is usually oil • Hydraulics can also be used to magnify force • An effort force on one piston can be magnified to move the heavier load with the other piston. Advantages of Hydraulics • Power and Versatility – can be transfer huge amounts of power with little input, - can be operated by unspecialized workers, saving on labor costs. • Resilience – load limiting hydraulic systems remain stable during power or system failures, -when repair are needed parts can be sourced easily Disadvantages of Hydraulics • Worker safety – Notorious sensitive to hear extremes and air pockets/bubbles which can destroy the hydraulic system if unresolved - line ruptures can lead serious injury and death - Hydraulic fluid is flammable. • Environmental Costs – Hydraulic mining are becoming unconventional ways to mine oil and gas using massive quantities of high pressure and chemically treated water. • Energy Efficiency – Due to fluid resistance and leakage it makes it inefficient References • https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=ILC_MVwch2A
