What is pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that can replace a noun in a


sentence. The noun that is replaced by a pronoun is
called an antecedent.
For example,
1. The French Ambassador met with the Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher that evening. They talked about
Thatcher’s plan to dismantle the nuclear plant. She said it
was a danger to the countryside.

2. One of the issues was revising the Constitution. This was a


subject that always raised a lively discussion.

Other common transitional words are personal and


demonstrative pronoun (he, they, this, that) which, by referring
back to their antecedent, help tie up with new thought to the old .

independent clause beginning with the word in parentheses.
Place the correct punctuation mark before the parenthetical
word, if necessary.

The relationship of ideas is indicated by relative pronouns

Four types of relative pronoun

1. who, whom, or whose refers to person


Example:
Gerry is the guy who talked at the conference in Seoul.

Yasmin is the girl whom Gerry looked at wistfully. She is the


girl whose grace brings out the best in him.

2. That is used to introduce a restrictive clause. Restrictive


clause means that it is an essential part of a sentence. Without it,
the sentence may lack the information or may change the
meaning.
Example:
The reason that I didn’t marry her is painful to recall.
(restrictive clause)
The reason is painful to recall (insufficient information)

3. Which introduces the nonrestrictive clause. Nonrestrictive clause is


an unnecessary clause added to the sentence. The sentence may
provide the same information even if the clause is removed. A comma
is usually placed before which.
Example:
The crowd, which was very angry, shouted at the speaker
(nonrestrictive clause)
The crowd shouted at the speaker.
( shouting gives an idea that the crowd may be angry at the speaker)

4. What is used when the antecedent is not expressed.


Example:
Mr. Kim asked Yasmin what she knew about Gerry.

The antecedent of what is understood to be “the thing/s”
