MATHEMATICS PRAYER

Dear God,
May we through your blessings, add purity to the
world, subtract evil from our lives, multiply the
good news of your son and divide your gifts and
share them with others. Amen.

You weere saving the money your ninongs and ninangs gave to you last Christmas
but when you check it, it was gone. You noticed your younger sister was able to buy
her favorite big We Bare Bears stuff toys, so you punished her by taking away those
We Bare Bears stuff toy. Do you think this was right?

You need to debate the validity of

your deduction, applying reasonable
arguments such as the tangible evidence
(stuff toys) and unknowns (other
family members or the possibility that
the money was misplaced, or you forgot
where you put it, for example).

Motivational Activity
Lesson 2-Reasoning
and Proofs (part 2)

Objective:
Write a proof (both direct and indirect)
INDUCTIVE or DEDUCTIVE
1. I saw her with the other guy, so that’s her boyfriend.
2. All dogs are mammals. All mammals have kidneys. Therefore all dogs have
kidneys.
3. My classmate turn off his camera, therefore he is not paying attention in the class
discussion.
4. The guidelines state that all entering senior high school must take Mathematics
Placement Test. You are an entering senior high. You will have to take the
Mathematics Placement Test.
5. Rose wakes up late, so she attend online class late.

Enrichment Activity
Deductive reasoning conclusion is based on facts such as definition
of terms and properties. Conclusion from deductive reasoning is true
when hypotheses are also true.

Steps in getting the Conclusion:

Step 1: Assume the hypothesis (given) to be true. Identify the conclusion
(prove). Recall that a conditional statement.
Step 2: Enumerate definition of terms or properties that can be used.
Write and argument in logical order.
Step 3: Write the interpretation. Use “given” and the “prove”.

Lesson Proper
Example 1: If 2x + 3 = 13, then what is the value of x?

Step 1: Assume the hypothesis (given) to be true. Identify the conclusion (prove).
Recall that a conditional statement.
Given: 2x + 3 = 13 Prove: x = 5
Step 2: Enumerate definition of terms or properties that can be used. Write and
argument in logical order.
2x + 3 = 13
2x + 3 – 3 = 13 – 3
2x = 10
x=5
Step 3: Write the interpretation. Use “given” and the “prove”.
If 2x + 3 = 13, then x = 5
Lesson Proper
Example 2: If 10x = 20, then what is the value of x?

Step 1: Assume the hypothesis (given) to be true. Identify the conclusion (prove).
Recall that a conditional statement.
Given: 10x = 20 Prove: x = 2
Step 2: Enumerate definition of terms or properties that can be used. Write and
argument in logical order.
10x = 20
x=2
Step 3: Write the interpretation. Use “given” and the “prove”.
If 10x = 20, then x = 2

Lesson Proper
Example 3: Prove using two-column proofs.
Given: 2x + 3 = 13 Prove: x = 5
Statement Reason
1. 2x + 3 = 13 1. Given

2. 2x + 3 - 3 = 13 - 3 2. Addition or Subtraction Property of Equality

3. 2x = 10 3. Simplification

4. 4. Division Property of Equality

5. Therefore, x = 5 5. Simplification or Division

Lesson Proper
Example 4: Prove using two-column proofs.
Given: 10x = 20 Prove: x = 2

Statement Reason
1. 10x = 20 1. Given

2. 2. Division Property of Equality

3. Therefore, x = 2 3. Simplification or Division

2. ∠1 and ∠2 form a linear pair.
2. Definition of linear pair of angles
∠2 and ∠3 form a linear pair.
3. ∠1 and ∠2 are supplementary. 3. Angles in linear pair are
∠2 and ∠3 are supplementary. supplementary.
4. m∠1 + m∠2 = 180
4. Definition of supplementary angles.
m∠2 + m∠3 = 180
5. m∠1 + m∠2 = m∠2 + m∠3 5. Transitive Property
6. m∠1 = m∠3 6. Subtraction Property
7. ∠1 ∠3 7. Definition of congruent angles

2. 2. Subtraction Property of Equality

3. 3. Simplification

4. 4. Simplification
5. 5. Multiplication Property of Equality
6. 6. Simplification

Statement Reason
1. ∠A and ∠B are supplementary 1. Given
2. m∠A + m∠B = 180 2. Definition of supplementary angles
3. m∠B = 7m∠A − 20 3. Given
4. m∠A + 7m∠A − 20 = 180 4. Substitution Property
5. 8m∠A − 20 = 180 5. Adding like terms
6. 8m∠A − 20 + 20 = 180 + 20
6. Addition Property of Equality

Formative
According to Merriam-Webster, Reasoning is the process of thinking about something in a
logical way in order to form a conclusion or judgment.
Prepare one small sheet of paper and ballpen.
I want you to look back for all the things that you said or think about someone without
any proof and reason and write that on your paper.
What did you do to prove that or How do you know if its true or not? Write it down also.

Synthesis
ASSIGNMENT NO. 2: YOUR REASON AND
PROOF
Directions:
1. Based on your synthesis activity, create a Two-Column Proof answering:
With Given (Situation) and Prove (Your Judgement)
What did you do to prove that or How do you know if its true or not.

2. Write your answer in your notebook.

3. Take a CLEAR picture of your answer.
4. TURN IN or on before the deadline.
