INTRODUCTION TO FORGING
2
INTRODUCTION
Forging is process of plastically
deforming metal or alloy to a specific
shape by a compressive force exerted
at elevated temperature by some
external agency like
hammer,press,rolls,dies, or by an
upsetting machine.
Blots,nuts,nails,cams,crank,shaft,
connecting rods, axels etc. are
produce by forging.

Press Forging
Machine which work on pressure on preform forging process is known as forging
process
The material gets deform throughout its entire depth.
The squeezing action is produced by mechanical presses or hydraulic presses.
Both this type of presses make use impression dies to produced exact shape and size.
For small forging closed impression dies may be used , and for bigger forging all
cultivates are put into a single block.
Press forging may be open die or closed die forging.

Forging Operation
Upsetting-
It is a forging operation where metal piece thickness or
Diameter increases and length of bar piece is reduced.
Bending-
Bending operation is performed by hammering the metal
over the edge of anvil or in vice using metal blocks.
Metal may be bent to various shape without damage its
structure, shrape bend and curved bend may be
performed.
Fullering-
Fullering is a primary forging operation where bar is
elongated between two fuller along its length.
It reduced the cross section of bar and lenthan of
projection of bar.

Introduction of press working
Press working is also termed as sheet metal working .
It may defined as a chipless manufacturing process by which various component are
made form metal sheet.
It involves the working of sheet between two dies .
In press working upper dies is called punch

Classification of press
1) According to the source of power 5) According to type of work
Mechanical press Punching press
Hydraulic press Blanking press
2) According to number of slide Drawing press
Single slide press Bending press
Double slide press Forming press
Triple slide press Embossing
3) According to mechanism of slide
Crank shaft drive
Cam drive
Rack and pinion drive

Press operation
Press operation done on sheet metal classified into two type
Cutting operation
Forming operation
a) Cutting operation
1. Punching
2. Blanking
3. Notching
4. Lancing
5. shearing
b) Forming operation
1. Bending
2. Drawing
15
a) Cutting operation
1) Punching-
Punching is operation of producing various shaped holes on sheet metal by punch and
die
here is hole is desired product and metal removed form the hole is waste material.
2) blanking-
It is a operation of cutting a flat shape form sheet metal
In this process removed out portion is the desired product and hole and metal left is a
waste material.
3) Notching-
Notching is a method, by which small shape or small portion of sheet metal is cut form
the edge.
4) Lancing-
It is a operation in which any shape or hole is partially cut and then one of its side is
bent downward.
5) shearing-
The operation involves applying two equal and opposite stress which exceed the
shear strength of material to be cut, hear the material is cut or separated by two
cutting edge.
16
B) Forming operation
1) Bending-
In this operation ; the material is in the form of flat sheet or strip is uniformly
strained around a linear axis which lies in the neutral plane and perpendicular
it’s the length wise direction of sheet or metal.
2) Drawing-
This is a process of forming a flat work piece into a hallow shape by means of
a punch which cause the blank into a die cavity.
