• OpenShot Video Editor is an easy-to-use, powerful application


that can be used to create your own video.
• The OpenShot Video Editor is designed to create and edit videos.
• It also provides you the tools for creating professional-looking
movies or slide shows by integrating pictures, video and music
clips.
• The OpenShot Video Editor can be used to create photo slide
shows, edit home videos, and create television commercials and
online films.

OpenShot Video Editor Components
Main toolbar

Function tabs
Project Files: It shows all the audio, video and image files that are
imported into your project
Transitions: Transition is a special video effect shown when one frame
of a clip changes into another one in a movie.
Effects: Effects are some special formats applied to specific pictures or
video clips. For example, you can apply one of the ‘Film Age’ effects to a
video clip to make it look like a classic old movie clip.

Video Preview
You can view the video that you are working on in this area.

Edit toolbar
It contains buttons to edit, trim and split clips.

Zoom slider
It will adjust the time-scale of your timeline.

Play-head/ Ruler
It shows the current position of the video clip.

Timeline
It shows your video project and each clip and transition in your project.

Importing Videos, Photos and Music
Steps to import media
Step 1: Click the Import Files option from the main toolbar.

Step 2: Choose the video file that you wish to edit or drag and drop
the files in the Project Files area as shown below.

Steps to add media files on the Timeline
Step 1: To arrange the images and video on the Timeline, right-click on
the clip from Project Files.
Step 2: Choose the Add to Timeline option. The video will get added to
the timeline in the topmost track.

Add track
It allows you to add different tracks in the Timeline. The OpenShot software
uses tracks to layer videos and images.

Editing a video
Razor track
It allows you to split a clip wherever you click. Once you have located the
desired frame, you can use the Razor Tool to split the clip.

Add Marker
It is used to mark the position where the
playhead is present. The playhead represents
the present playback position.
Markers are added to mark points of interest
in the video so that the user can quickly jump
back to the exact point while previewing.

Zoom slider
It allows you to change the time scale of your timeline. You can use Zoom in
to see the video in the timeline more closely and Zoom out to see the entire
project without constantly scrolling left or right.

Adding Titles and Credits in the Video

Step 1: Click the Title menu, located in


the main menu of OpenShot, to launch
the Titles editor window.

Changing Clip Properties
Fade
It is used to apply fading effect to your videos. OpenShot has two
methods for fading a clip-Fade In and Fade Out.

Animate
This option has preset
settings that can be directly
added to a clip, such as zoom
in, zoom out, animate left to
right, animate top to bottom,
animate center to left and so
on.

Rotate
It is used to rotate or flip a video.

Layout
It is used to make a video smaller or
larger, and move it to any corner of the
screen.

Time
It is used to speed up or slow
down a video. It can be used
to freeze and zoom a part of
the video. It can also be used
to play the video backwards.

Volume
It is used to change the volume settings
of a video, such as Fade in and Fade out
and change the volume levels.

Separate audio
This option is used to create a clip for
each audio track.
Slice
This option is used to cut the clip for each
audio track.
Display
This option is used to show a thumbnail
of a clip.

Transform
To quickly adjust the location
and scale of a clip, select a
clip on the timeline, then
right-click and choose the
Transform option. Drag any of
the small blue handles to
scale it, and drag the middle
circle to move the image.

Properties
You can adjust the settings of the clip in a very precise way using the
Properties option.

Transitions
• This option shows a range of transitions that you can add to your
video.
• Transitions are the effects or animations that are used to change a
scene of the movie to another.
• Transition effects give the movie a more professional look and makes
it more appealing to the viewers.

Steps to add a
Transition
Step 1: To add a
transition, select the
Transition tab and the
transition of your
choice by
clicking it.
Step 2: Drag and drop
the transition onto the
timeline. It will snap
between 2 tracks.

Adding Transitions and Effects
• You can move a transition by selecting it and dragging it to a new
position.
• You can also resize a transition by dragging its left or right edge.
Resizing a transition can be used to increase or decrease the time
period of the transition effect.
Transition Properties
Similar to a clip, a transition also has various settings that you can change.
To do this right- click a transition and select Properties. To save your
changes, click the Apply button.

Effects
Effects are used to modify the
video, image or the sound of a clip.
For example, a Blur effect will cause
the video to blur. A Wave effect will
cause the video to have waves.

Export video
Effects
• After creating your video, you need to export your video.
• Exporting a video will allow you to convert it into a single video file that
can work on any media player such as Totem, VLC, SMPlayer, Video Player
and so on.

Step 1: Click the Export Video icon at the top of the screen or use the File
> Export Video.

Step 2: The Export Video window will open. Change the export presets
such as the name of the file, select the location where you want to save
the video and then click Export Video. You can also save your file first and
then export the video. The file extension for OpenShot Video editor
is .osp.
