Second Sojourn
in EUROPE
Rizal’s Asian and American Tour
Rizal in HONGKONG

Rizal first stop when he left the Philippines
half-sick and disillusioned. (He stay in Hong
Kong for 3 days)

Manuel Iriate and Jose Maria Basa - (He
Met)Filipinos exiled in 1872 for their alleged
involvement in the Cavite mutiny.

February 19, 1888 – Rizal boarded the boat KUI
KIANG that took him to Macao.
Rizal in MACAO

Jose Sainz de Veranda and Jose Maria Basa -
friend of Rizal who stayed in Macao.

His Description of Macao was “The city of Macao
is small, low and marshy”.

He visited

February 22, 1888

He boarded the steam ship OCEANIC bound
for Japan.
Rizal in JAPAN
February 28, 1888 – He arrived in Yokohama,
Japan. He lived in Charge d’affaires
(Ambassador) of Spain.

He met Tetcho Suechiro (who became his


friend)– a newspaperman & chief editor of some
Japanese newspapers.

O Sei-San (Seiko Usui) – Rizal had a close and


intimate relationship with her.
April 13, 1888 – Rizal boarded the ship S.S.
Belgic, bound for the United States of America.

Rizal had an intimate relationship in Japanese
woman named, Osei-san (Seiko Usui)

April 27, 1888 – He arrived in America
May 4, 1888 – He disembark the S.S. Belgic
May 6 – He boarded a regular ferryboat going to
Oakland.
May 7 – He transferred to a train heading towards
Sacramento, and then to Nevada
May 8 – Rizal Salt Lake City
May 9 – The train arrived in Colorado
May 10 – The train arrived in Nebraska, where he saw
the Missouri River
May 11 – He arrived in Chicago and saw the Niagara Falls
May 13 – The train arrived in Albany City

In total Rizal toured in America for 20 days.


May 16, 1888 he border in the ship City of
Rome bound to Europe.

Rizal in England
May 25, 1888 – Aboard the City of Rome, where Rizal is
one of its passenger arrive in Liverpool. He stayed at
Adelphi Hotel.

May 26 – He boarded the train bound for London, where


upon his arrival he rented a room in the house of the
Beckett Family. Rizal paid 45 pesos in Philippine value
in the house of Beckett Family.

He met the friend of Prof. Blumentritt, Dr. Reinhold


Rost – A biographer, librarian of ministry of foreign
affairs
 After gaining access to the British
Museum Library he painstakingly
copied by hand and annotated the
book entitled “Sucesos de las Islas
Filipinas” or Historical Events of the
Philippine Islands written by Antonio
de Morga, in 1609.
*While in the British Museum Library, he compared
Morga’s work with other books such as:
• Conquest of the Philippine Island – Gaspar de San
Agustin (1696)
• Letter to the King of Spain about the condition of the
Indios – Martin De Rada
• Philippines in the 1600 – Fr. Pedro Chirino
• The Chinese portrayed by themselves – Tseng-Ki-Tong
• Memoria sobre el ramo de motes – a memoir of Videl y
Soler
• Espana En Filipinas – a newspaper published in
Barcelona.
*September 1888 - he visited Paris to
witness an Exhibit entitled Bibliotheque
Nacionale.

*December 11 – spent his time with the


famiy of Juan Luna.
*The active propagandist
* December 31, 1888 – inauguration of the La Solidaridad
* A society intended in spreading newspaper all over
Barcelona and Madrid about the issues in the
Philippines.

*Rizal Receives Sad news From the
Philippines
* September 1888 – Rizal receives news form his compatriots in
Hong Kong of the banning the ruthlessness of the Spanish
authorities against those who possess copies of the novel Noli.

* After leaving the Philippines in February, Calamba was left in a


turmoil as the Dominican friars abused the people of Calamba
with paying excessive Taxations and mistreatments on their
tenants.

* Soon both parties sued each other upon the court of justice, but
rendering the friars with winning most cases.
*Rizal Receives Sad news From the
Philippines
* When Governor General Wayler Valeriano Ascended through
Ranks Philippines shifted from a biased country that choose to
support the corrupt and injustice. Pushing especially the Rizal’s
and the people of Calamba to a corner.
* Rizal received a letter about the death of Mariano
Herbosa
* October 6, 1888 – the brother-in-law of Rizal , Manuel T.
Hidalgo, was banished without any trials.
*Rizal in Paris
*March of 1889 – Rizal left the Beckett family and
proceeded in Paris, France.

*He corresponded with Bluementritt with forming the


organization called Kidlat

*He also formed the organization International


Association of Filipinologist – objective is to study
the Philippines from the scientific and historical point
of view
*Rizal in Paris
*Another organization is Indios Bravos (I.B) –
tasked to manifest physical prowess to gain the
inspiration of foreigners and highlight the
Filipino races.
