Positive Statement Negative Question tag
You are a student, aren’t you?
He is very busy, isn’t he?
She was happy, wasn’t she?
They were surprise, weren’t they?
I am late, aren't I?
Negative Statement Positive Question tag
You aren’t a teacher, are you?
He isn’t crazy, is he?
She wasn’t relaxed, was she?
They weren’t late, were they?
Example of question tags with modal and
auxiliary verb:
Positive statement Negative Question tag
Your parents have retired, haven’t they?
You had arrived before we left, hadn’t you?
You will pass the exam, won’t you?
She can speak two languages, can’t she?
James could do it for me, couldn’t he?
We must be patient, mustn’t we?
You should go now, shouldn’t you?
You would like a new job, wouldn’t you?
Example of question tags with modal and
auxiliary verb:
Negative statement Positive Question tag
He haven’t been here all week, have he?
You hadn’t done it before then, had you?
You won’t tell anyone, will you?
She can’t drive a car, can she?
He couldn’t do it for me, could he?
We mustn’t say anything, must we?
You shouldn’t be so busy, should you?
You wouldn’t stop me, would you?
When the verb in the statement is present
simple:

Jenny eats cheese, doesn’t she?
You speak English, don’t you?
He wants a new car, doesn’t he?

When the verb in the statement is past


simple:

I said that already, didn’t I?
You studied for the test, didn’t you?

You don’t speak French, do you?

Statements using:
• Barely
• Hardly
• Neither
• No
• Nobody
• None
• Nothing
• Seldom
Are considered as negative statements.
