    Animals go through different life cycles as they grow from babies to adults. Some animals, like butterflies and frogs, undergo a dramatic transformation called metamorphosis where they transform completely from one stage to the next. Other animals, like spiders and birds, develop gradually through different stages without a complete transformation. All animal life cycles involve inheriting traits from parents and changing physically as they mature to adulthood.

    • All animals inherit
    some things from
    their parents. This
    means all animals
    look a little like
    their parents.

    How are life cycles different
    between animals?
    • Some animals do
    not look anything
    like their parents
    when they are
    born. This total
    change is called a
    metamorphosis.

    • Other animals
    look like small
    versions of their
    parents when they
    are born. They do
    not go through
    metamorphosis
    Complete Metamorphosis
    • A butterfly starts its life as
    an egg.
    • The larva (caterpillar)
    hatches from an egg and
    eats leaves or flowers
    almost constantly.
    • It turns into a pupa this is
    a resting stage.
    • A beautiful, flying adult
    butterfly emerges.
    Incomplete Metamorphosis
    • Dragonfly lay their egg in
    water.
    • Nymphs then spend some
    time in the water to
    continue its
    metamorphosis.
    • Once nymphs shed their
    skin, they spend the rest of
    their life out of the water.
    Metamorphosis
    • The mother frog lay her eggs
    in the pond.
    • Tadpoles hatch from the
    eggs and live in the pond.
    • The tadpoles turn into
    Froglets. The body shrinks
    and legs form.
    • The Froglet’s tail srinks, the
    lungs develop and the back
    legs grow and then we have
    a Frog.
    Anthropod Life Cycle
    Egg Sac
    • A female spider lays
    thousands of eggs. The eggs
    are wrapped in a silk egg sac.
    • The egg sac is made of silk
    and is usually white.
    • Spiderlings hatch from the
    eggs. They look like tiny
    Egg Spiderlings adults.
    • The last stage of a spider is
    the adult stage.

    Adult
    Bird Life Cycle
    • The female penguin lays 1 or
    2 eggs. After laying eggs the
    females transfer the eggs to
    their male partners.
    • As the egg hatch the chick
    Chick come out they are either
    brown or black in color.
    Egg • The time the chicks are
    ready to swim, it is summer
    and the sea is abundant with
    food.
    Adult
    Fish Life Cycle
    • The egg grows inside the
    mothers stomach.
    • The fertilized shark comes
    out called pup.
    • The pup become bigger
    and bigger and turn into
    and full grown adult
    shark.
    Mammal Life Cycle
    • A baby bat is born. the
    mother usually carry it.
    • Pups are the other name of
    baby bat they usually
    hang.
    • Pups cling to the mother
    because they cannot fly on
    its own until 2-3 months.
    • A bat is an adult when it is
    around one years old.
    Reptile Life Cycle
    • Snake lay its eggs in a hole in
    the ground, they are usually
    soft.
    • When the egg hatch, baby
    snakes are off and running or
    rather slithering on the ground
    looking for food.
    • Baby snakes looks like an
    adult snake and grow bigger
    as days goes by.
