Effect Size

The document discusses effect size and statistical analyses that can be used to analyze data from customer satisfaction surveys conducted at four retail store locations. It provides definitions of effect size and discusses how effect size gives information about whether a difference between groups is important. It also lists many common statistical tests such as Pearson's chi-square, Pearson's r, and Cohen's d that could be used to analyze the survey data and test if each store provides a similar level of customer service.

• In general an effect size is “the magnitude of the impact of the
independent variable on the dependent variable.”

• Effect size gives researchers the information that they may
have thought they were getting from a null hypothesis
significance test, which is whether the difference between
groups is important or negligible.

*Cloze test (also cloze deletion test) is an exercise, test, or assessment consisting of a portion of text with certain words
removed (cloze text), where the participant is asked to replace the missing words. Cloze tests require the ability
to understand context and vocabulary in order to identify the correct words or type of words that belong in the
deleted passages of a text. This exercise is commonly administered for the assessment of native and
second language learning and instruction.
• In order to determine customer satisfaction rates, a retail
company conducted surveys of 582 customers at 4 store
locations. From the survey results, you found that the quality of
customer service was the most important factor to a customer's
overall satisfaction. Given this information, you want to test
whether each of the store locations provides a similar and
adequate level of customer service.

• Cohen’s d measures the difference between two independent
sample means, and expresses how large the difference is in
standard deviations. Therefore, if
• Cohen’s d = 1, the two means differ by one standard deviation
• Measures how much an
independent and dependent
variable vary together or, in
other words, the amount of
covariation in the two
variables. The more closely the
two variables are related, the
higher the effect size

More specifically, 71 percent of the variance
in aggression scores is attributable to whether
subjects are deprived of sleep for 0, 24, 48 hr,
while the remaining 29 percent of variance in
aggression scores is not attributable to hours
of sleep deprivations.
• There are many statistical analyses available, but remember
there is a degree of rigor required; in your thesis you can
demonstrate your skills using them.
