I am Teacher Inah Cano.
I am here because I would like
to share how teaching Math can
be really fun in Early Childhood
Education.

The importance of
1 teaching
mathematics in
ECE
A child’s math knowledge at the start of
kindergarten predicts later academic
achievement better than early reading
or attention skills.

How is
MATH
related to

development
?

OUR OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, participants are able to;
1. Consider math concept for young children,
2.Enumerate materials that can be used in
teaching math to young children and;
3.Design developmentally appropriate tools
for young children when teaching math

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT IN
YOUNG CHILDREN
Concepts are the building blocks of knowledge;
they allow people to organize and categorize
information..Concepts can be applied to the
solution of new problems that are met in
everyday. (Charlesworth&Lind,2010)

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT IN
YOUNG CHILDREN
EARLY MATHEMATICS
Refers to the exposure and interaction of materials
that contribute to the acquisition of knowledge about math
concepts.
PHYSICAL KNOWLEDGE
Learning the characteristics of color, size and weight
of objects in the environment.
12
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT IN
YOUNG CHILDREN
LOGICO-MATHEMATICAL KNOWLEDGE
Includes relationships constructed in order to make sense out
of world, such as counting and classification.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The construction of knowledge through solving problems
and experiencing the result.

TIPS TO REMEMBER
MATH CONCEPTS SHOULD BE CONCRETE & MANIPULATIVE
CONSIDER PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
CONSIDER CHILDREN’S INTERESTS
HELP CHILDREN WITH NEW VOCABULARY
SOCIAL INTERACTION IS IMPORTANT

Foundational
2 CONCEPTS OF
COUNTING AND
NUMBERS
wHAT they
need to learn?
1. Number Sense
2. Rote Counting
3. One - to - One
Correspondence
4. Number Recognition
5. Classifying and Sorting
17
NUMBER
SENSE is a
concept and
counting
skill that
children use
often in
everyday
activities.
18
ROTE
COUNTING
is the ability to recite
names
of numerals in order
while RATIONAL
COUNTING requires
matching each
numeral name, in order,
to an object in a group
19
ONE TO ONE
CORRESPON
DENCE
is an early learning math
skill that involves the act
of counting each object in
a set once, and only once
with one touch per object.
20
NUMBER
RECOGNITIO
N
is the ability to visually
recognize and name
numbers.
21
Numeral - 1
Number
Triangle
Subitizing - * Number
Word - one
22
CLASSIFYING AND
SORTING
Sorting - involves grouping objects or
events according to their similarities (e.g.,
all the cars, all the socks)
