Smart Wheelchair for Blind

People

Dr. Om Prakash
Associate Professor,
SVCET, Chittoor
Introduction
• Wheelchair is a wheeled mobility device in which the user sits.

• People with walking disability is the common user of the wheel chair.

• Both Manual and automatic wheel chair is available inthe market.

• Features is more in Automatic wheel chair when compared to manual.

• Our proposal is to develop prototype of the Smart Autonomous Wheelchair for

blind People.
Project Abstract

Visually impaired or blind persons have serious problem of

independent movement from one place to another. They have
always to depend on a person with normal vision. The
proposed vehicle is expected to provide them freedom of
movement by implementing latest electronics and
communication technologies into an improved wheelchair by
audio and tactile interactive controls. The design includes an
array of sensors including GPS to have a 'view' of the 'path'
and 'electronic brain' to take decision and control the vehicle
for safe and efficient movement.
Market Analysis
The proposed system, at the moment, does not exist for commercial
production. Outcome of the project is expected to be a fully functional
prototype of the Smart Autonomous Wheelchair for blind People with
following salient technical features:
a) Battery powered for independent movement.
b) Four wheels for stability and efficient steering functions.
c) Electronic power and control functions for efficiency and reliability.
d) Integrated with GPS and standard telecom devices/protocols for
reliable navigation.
e) Can 'listen' and 'learn' audio commands and give audio and tactile
responses.
f) May 'remember' frequently used itineraries/ functions.
g) Automatic mechanical braking on signal/sensor/control/power
failure.
h) Manual controls to enable normal person to use as ordinary
wheelchair in case of system failures

.
Objective
• To design and develop an affordable wheelchair for blind
persons with state-of-art technology innovations.

Proposed Design

Project Significance
The expected work to be done during development of the proposed
Wheelchair will include latest in the field of electronics (embedded
systems, power electronics and Internet of Things) and
telecommunication technologies. This will be a team work having
extensive involvement of students and faculty. The knowledge
gained during the process of development will improve the
academic level of all those involved in the work in the form of
research papers, patents, undergraduate projects and part of post-
graduate thesis. Lectures and training programs may be arranged
during the process of development. Fresh additions of material are
also possible in existing courses as an outcome of the proposed
project.
Innovativeness of the Proposed Solution

Outcome of the project is expected to be a fully

functional prototype of the Smart Autonomous
Wheelchair for blind People.
First of all, with the help of a laser scanner a simplified
3D map is created of the wheelchair surroundings. The
laser scanner uses Time-of-flight technique. The 3D map
is transferred to the electronic brain of wheelchair, so
that a electronic brain can "feel or see" obstacles such
as open doors or oncoming people, and navigate past
them.
TIME-OF-FLIGHT PRINCIPLE
Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors measure distances using the time that
it takes for photons to travel between two points, from the sensor’s
emitter to a target and then back to the sensor’s receiver.

Indirect and direct ToF both offer specific advantages in specific

contexts. Both can simultaneously measure intensity and distance
for each pixel in a scene.

Direct ToF sensors send out short pulses of light that last just a few
nanoseconds and then measure the time it takes for some of the
emitted light to come back. Indirect ToF sensors send out
continuous, modulated light and measure the phase of the reflected
light to calculate the distance to an object.

Expected outcome

• The proposed project is expected to provide an affordable

wheelchair for blind persons with state-of-art technology
innovations. The wheelchair will enable the user to move from
one place to other almost like a person having normal vision.
• The operation can also be performed by programming the
wheelchair for a physically challenged person having difficulty
in operating the controls due to disability of limbs and/or
speech.
• The mechanical movements of the vehicle are planned to use
power electronics devices for smooth and efficient operations.
This will result in saving energy, extended time between
charging and improved battery life.
• The knowledge and experience gained during execution of
project may be used for guidance in the development of other
kind of systems for blind as well as disabled persons.
• Technical consultancy may be provided to the organizations
involved in the development of systems for the persons with
different disabilities.
• The information in the form of data and designs may be used
for generating revenue from social organizations/ industries
on national/ international levels.
