    Community Service and its

    Contribution to Education

    What is Community
    Service?
    According to Christine Sarikas,
    “Community service is work done
    by a person or group of people
    that benefits others.” In other
    words, community service is
    voluntary work (unpaid work)
    which is aimed at helping others
    and improving society.
    Benefits of Community Service
    Engaging in community service provides students
    with the opportunity to become active members
    of their community and has a lasting, positive
    impact on society at large. Community service or
    volunteerism enables students to acquire life
    skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service
    to those who need it most.

    The Impact of Community Service (Tutoring) on
    Education
    Tutoring is a form of community service that involves one person (the tutor) teaching and
    other person (the tutee/s). This form of community service positively impacts education as it
    not only benefits the tutees but also the tutor. This type of volunteerism creates a more
    comfortable atmosphere for the tutees to better understand the subject area/s and feel more
    comfortable raising any questions that they may have. This will thereby increase the tutees
    understanding of the subject and naturally this will positively impact education. If the tutor
    is a student himself/herself, these sessions will also help the tutor as it allows the tutor to get
    a better understanding of the particular subject area that is being taught. Joe Mackel concurs
    my view and elaborates on the topic in “The Mutual Benefits of Community Tutoring”
    where he stated that “Tutoring creates a one-person classroom at little cost through the
    volunteerism of community members who also gain from the program. ... Tutors may
    increase their knowledge of another culture as I did or gain a more complete vision of their
    community by interacting with people whom they normally would not.”
    The Impact of Community Service on Education
    In addition, Sarah Mead states that “Studies show that students who give back to the
    community perform better in school, particularly in subjects such as math, reading, and
    history. Furthermore, students who participate in community service are also more likely to
    graduate from high school.” Mead has identified that students who participate in community
    service oftentimes do better in school. Perhaps this is due to the time management skills that
    students develop when volunteering because volunteers oftentimes have to learn how to
    manage their time so that they can volunteer and still get school tasks done. Mary Ann
    Barge postulates that “students find that they are able to develop skills in leadership,
    communication, working well with a team, and finding solutions for problems.”
    Conclusion
    In summation, community service has
    contributed greatly to education, not only
    in instilling good values within volunteers
    which improves work ethics at school; but
    also in directly increasing one's
    knowledge and drive to succeed. Through
    community service many lives are
    impacted around the world. Due to this, I
    have learned first hand that, “Life’s most
    persistent and urgent question is, What
    are you doing for others?” and I'm truly
    glad that I can confidently answer
    knowing my volunteerism is contributing
    to the education of students around the
    Caribbean.
