File Based Approach Vs Database Approach

This document defines and compares the file-based approach and database approach to data management. The file-based approach involves storing data in separate computer files defined by different application programs, while the database approach involves sharing a pool of related data from a centralized location. The file-based approach allows for easy editing but has disadvantages of data redundancy and inconsistency. The database approach has advantages of minimal redundancy and improved consistency but is more expensive and complex to implement. Overall, the database approach is considered more relevant due to saving time and reducing chances of redundant or inconsistent data while providing easier data accessibility.

File Based Approach vs Database Approach

By: Chevannese Ellis

Objectives
1. Define File Based Approach and Database Approach.
2. The advantages and disadvantages of File Based Approach and Database
Approach.
3. Differences between File Based Approach and Database Approach.
4. Discussion about the relevance of using Database Approach.
• Defintion of File Based
Approach

● It is an approach where data is stored in one

or more separate computer files defined and
managed by different application programs.
Advantages and Disadvantages of File Based Approach
Advantages Disadvantages

1. Editing 1. Data Redundancy

 It is easy to edit any information  The same information can be
stored in computers in form of duplicated in several files
files. which wastes time.

2. Backup 2. Data Inconsistency

 It is possible to take faster and
automatic back-up of database  Different copies of the same
stored in files. data might not match.

• Definition of Database
Approach

• It is an approach whereby a pool of related data

is shared by multiple application programs that
originates from a centralized location
(repository).
Advantages and Disadvantages of Database Approach
Advantages Disadvantages

1. Minimal Data Redundancy 1. More Expensive

 Database management systems
 It can reduce or eliminate can be expensive to purchase
duplicate data. and operate.

2. Improved Data Consistency 2. More Complex

 If the amount of data  It can be difficult to set up
redundancy is controlled, it will and time consuming.

Differences between File Based Approach and
Database Approach
1. File Based Approach files are isolated and difficult in sharing with other people while
database approach files are in common directory, easy to share among users.
2. File Based Approach files are difficult to update and maintain while database approach
files is easy to update and maintain.
Why is Database Approach
more relevant to use?
Because it saves more time with less chances of data
redundancies and inconsistencies. It also provides the user with
easier accessibility to the data which file based approach is
simply weak at.
