What Is Art
What Is Art
What Is Art
Is this ART?
Yes because
not all
elephants can
paint(?)
NO because
elephants can not
express freely
their thoughts
and emotions(?)
Perhaps we have
a low
understanding of
the meaning of art
and the reason we
can’t decide.
And the definition
we give art
sometimes depends
on the price of the
artwork.
Before I give the meaning of
ART…
Did you ever wonder why do you have to take Art
Appreciation JUST NOW?
Did you take this course in
Elementary or High School?
Because Art Appreciation requires a
certain degree of intelligence and not just
a simple ‘liking’ of the work of art.
Nature or the Universe is created
by God or for those who don’t
believe, via scientific evolution.
The stars and
the galaxies are
part of universal
nature.
The same goes
with the
mountains and
trees.
A simple flower
is also part of
this beautiful
nature.
The fish and all
the living
things are
created by God.
MAN, on the other hand is
also part of nature and/or
scientific evolution.
BUT we have a certain
distinct character that
separates us from all the
animals:
DEVELOPED BRAIN
We are rational beings, capable of
expressing ourselves through the
creation of various forms of art.
• Painting
• Sculpture
• Architecture
• Music
• Literature
• Theatre
• Dance
• Drama
• Film
• Photography and allied arts
Therefore, is the ‘painting’ by
the elephant can be
considered as ART?
The obvious answer is NO.
Have you seen a drunk lion
because he was broken
hearted?
Or elephants
protesting
because they are
inside a Zoo for
so long?
Or a monkey
showing his
love thru
painting just
like Da Vinci?
Art is Man-made
Art is Man-made
Art is an object created only by man and this specific and
glorified object is what separates ‘man’ from other animals.
Artistic creation is his way of expressing himself through visual,
auditory, and performing arts. Some have argued that animal
paintings like those made by the elephants in Thailand can be
considered as a work art. But these pieces are void of any
meaning because elephants are not rational beings capable of
expressing themselves. It is just a wonderful creation worthy of
admiration by the tourists.
Art is an extension of one’s ‘soul’
Through art, one can express
his ideas, beliefs, political
views and emotions. Many of
our heroes have used art to
rally their cause. A good
example is our national hero
Dr. Jose Rizal. He was a
writer/artist first before he was
a doctor. By using his creative
talents, he was able to open the
minds of many and liberated a
country from the colonial rule
of the Spaniards.
Art embodies skill and talent
potentials know the basic
of art making. Drawing
superbly at elementary
level until he develops it
and blossom to a real
artist. Most of us can
draw but the skill and
talent will not evolve into
something good because
it wasn’t there in the
beginning. No wonder
many in their old age still
draw stick human figures.
Imagine if all of us can
create wonderful works
of art, then therefore
there will be no more
Fine Arts or Architecture
because we can paint and
design for ourselves.
Art, when combined
with politics is powerful.
As mentioned earlier, Dr. Jose Rizal
used his artistic talents in liberating a
nation. His book ‘Noli Me Tangere’
opened the minds of many Ilustrados
that paved the way for the creation of
the Katipunan and eventually to a
revolution. A simple and harmless
book yet very lethal. As the old
adage goes; ‘The pen is mightier
than the sword’.
We go and watch a
movie to be
entertained. We listen
to music to amp our
mood or to reminisce
and heal a broken
heart. We read books
because it is better
than the movie
version. Let’s admit
it, what would life be
without art?
Art has
multiple
interpretations
The meaning of art is
often shared among the
members of a given
society and dependent
upon cultural context. The
masterpiece Spoliarium
by Juan Luna was
perceived to be a political
piece and a protest by the
artist to showcase the
suffering inflicted by the
Spaniards to his fellow
countrymen.
Questions to ponder upon
Do I now have a Do I have the Will this course
