When unfamiliar words are the ones that block!
Strategize, strategize, vocabulary wise! Familiarize,
familiarize, the words that arise
Hints here, signals there, clues are everywhere
Categorize, conceptualize, and then contextualize
Context clues are the ones that guide.

What can you say about the poem?

Do you find difficulty in understanding the
poem?
Context clues are the hints (word or words) to the right meaning of an
unfamiliar word used in the sentence. The clue may be found in the
preceding sentence, within the same sentence or succeeding sentence.
There are many types of context clues. The six commonly used are as
follows:
Types of Context Clues and Definition

1. Definition or Restatement. The word in the sentence is given a

definition which usually comes after.
Example: Nard’s duplicity, crafty dishonesty, caused him to steal his
classmate’s wallet.

2. Synonym. The word is provided with a similar word to explain its
meaning.
Example: The teacher punished Nard for his duplicity or deceitfulness
after discovering what he did.
3. Antonym or Contrast. The exact opposite of synonym, the word is given an
opposite definition to uncover its meaning.
Example: Unlike his brother who had integrity to spare, Nard has nothing
more than duplicity and he will be disciplined for two days.
4. Example. The word is provided with an example to illustrate its meaning.
Example: Nard’s duplicity included copying answers in the final exams,
passing projects not originally owned by him, aside from stealing his
classmate’s wallet.
5. Explanation. The word is given an explanation in a sentence that
immediately follows.
Example: Nard is so deceitful that he cleverly keeps up to his dishonest
and mischievous tricks in school.
6. Root Words and Affixes. The word’s meaning is extracted through the
meaning of root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
Example: People who have kleptomania are not afraid of stealing anything
they like.
