Speed AND Acceleration: Form 2 Pa G E 2 2 5

Speed is the rate of change of distance with respect to time. It is calculated as total distance divided by total time. Average speed is used to describe the speed over a whole journey when speed is not uniform. Acceleration is the rate of change of speed with respect to time. Examples show calculations of average speed and time taken for journeys using the speed, distance, and time values provided.

THINGS TO KNOW
SPEED FORMULA
Speed is the rate of change of •

distance with respect to time •UNIT: km/h or m/s

KEYWORDS
UNITS CONVERSION
•Time: how long, duration • = 1000m
• Distance: how far • = 60 min = 3600sec
EXAMPLE 8:
Two towns A and B are 450km apart. A car travels from town A at an
average speed of 50km/h. How long does it take to reach town B?

hours

The car takes 9 hours to reach town B.

EXAMPLE 11:
A car travels at a speed of 90km/h. Find its average speed in m/sec.

Speed = 90km/h  m/sec

m/sec
1km= 1000m
1h = 60 min = 3600 sec

The average speed is 25m/sec.

UNIFORM SPEED VS NON-UNIFORM SPEED
• Uniform speed is a speed that is always the same or constant.

• Non-uniform speed is a speed that is not equal or not constant.

AVERAGE SPEED
It is impossible for a bus to move at a uniform speed throughout its whole
journey. Therefore the average speed is used to describe the speed of the
bus.
