This document discusses concepts related to stopping sight distance (SSD), breaking distance, overtaking sight distance (OSD), and overtaking zones. It provides formulas to calculate SSD, breaking distance, and OSD. It also includes an example problem calculating SSD for a rural freeway with a design speed of 70 mi/hr. Additionally, it presents a sample problem calculating OSD and minimum overtaking zone length for overtaking and overtaken vehicles traveling at 80 km/hr and 65 km/hr respectively.

STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE
(SSD)
Stopping sight distance,  d PRT = 0.278 vt (unit: m)
d ssd = d PRT + db Where, v= design speed, km/hr
Where, t = reaction time (2.5 sec)
d PRT = Distance covered during  d PRT = 1.47 vt (unit: ft)
perception reaction time (m)
Where, v= design speed, mi/hr
db = Breaking distance (m)
t = reaction time (2.5 sec)
BREAKING DISTANCE(D B )

 Breaking distance, db = {(Vi)2 – (Vf)2}/{254 or 30 (F ± 0.01G)}

Where, Vi =Initial speed (km/hr)

Vf = Final speed (km/hr)
G = Grade level of road [ used positive sign for upgrade and negative sign for
downgrade]
F = Co-efficient of friction = 0.348
Note: [ used 30 when speed in mile/hr and 254 when speed in km/hr]
Overtaking Sight Distance (OSD)
The distance visible to the driver of a vehicle intending to overtake
another slow moving vehicle, without causing any inconvenience
or possibility of accident to the traffic in the opposite direction is
called Overtaking Sight Distance (OSD) or Safe Passing Sight
Distance.
Speed of overtaking, overtaken & vehicle coming from
opposite direction.
Rate of acceleration of the overtaking vehicle.
Spacing between the vehicles.
Skill and reaction time of the driver.
Minimum Requirement for OSD

Overtaking Sight Distance,

In kmph units,
Calculation of SSD
Problem: Consider a rural section of a freeway with a design
speed of 70 mi/hr. on a section of a level terrain. What safe
stopping distance must be provided?
 Solution:
We Know,
d ssd = d PRT + db
= 1.47 vt + {(Vi)2 – (Vf)2}/{ 30 (F ± 0.01G)}
= 1.47*70*2.5 + {(70)2 – (0)2}/{30 (0.348 + 0)}
= 726.6 ft
= 727 ft
Calculation of OSD
Problem: The speed of overtaking & overtaken vehicles are
80km/hr. & 65 km/hr. respectively on a two way traffic road.
If the acceleration of overtaking vehicle is 3.6 km/hr./sec.
Calculate-
(a). Safe OSD
(b). Minimum length of overtaking zone.
(c). Safe OSD if the road is one-way.
(d). Maximum length of overtaking zone.
Calculation of OSD
Given, Solution:
Adopt reaction time, t = 2 sec

Now, Now,
Calculation of OSD
Now,

(b). Minimum length of overtaking zone

(c). OSD for one-way road

(d). Minimum length of overtaking zone

Overtaking Zone
There may be stretches of road where the safe overtaking distance
can not be provided. In such case, overtaking opportunity for
vehicles moving at a design speed should be given at frequent
interval. These zones which are meant for overtaking, are called
overtaking zones.
