TON OF REFRIGERATION AND

HEAT LOAD CALCULATION

ARC313

LATENT HEAT
Latent heat, energy absorbed or released by a
substance during a change in its physical state (phase)
that occurs without changing its temperature.

TON OF REFRIGERATION

Ton of Refrigeration (TR): Ton of Refrigeration

(abbreviated as TR) is an important historical unit of
refrigeration capacity. Originally 1 TR was defined as
the rate of heat transfer required to make 1 ton
(1000KG) of ice per day (24HR) from water at 0oC.

1 TON OF AC WILL BE
REMOVING 3.876 KW OF
24 HRS HEAT FROM THE ROOM
LATENT HEAT OF ICE = 335 KJ / KG
LATENT HEAT OF 1000 KG ICE = 335 KJ/KG X 1000 KG PRACTICALLY ONE TR IS
1 TON OF REFRIGERATION 335 KJ/KG X 1000 KG EQUAL TO 3.517 KW
24 HRS

335 KJ/KG X 1000 KG

1 TON OF REFRIEGERATION = = 3.87KJ/SEC = 3.87 KW
24 X 3600 SEC

1 TON OF REFRIGERATION = 12000 BTU = 3.876 KJ/SEC = 3.876 KW

a room with heating load as following

1. 3 people producing heat 0.5KW
2. Walls and windows producing heat 2KW
3. Electrical appliances producing heat 1KW
4. Mataces and linen producing heat 1.37KW

a one brick thick wall having (R value 0.24 *F Hr Sqft /BTU) has length 4m and height
3.5m. Calculate the total heat load of the wall (in BTU/HR) when temperature
difference between external and internal is 30*F. Also recommend the tonnage of AC
required for the same.
