Visual Perceptual Skills: Nishtha Bharadwaj Rehabilitation Psychologist

This document discusses visual perceptual skills and the visual perceptual process. It describes the steps in the perceptual process which include environmental stimulus, attended stimulus, image on the retina, transduction, neural processing, perception, and recognition. It then discusses the human eye, retinal structure, and visual areas of the cerebral cortex. Finally, it outlines several specific visual spatial skills including visual memory, visual sequential memory, visual form constancy, visual figure ground, visual spatial relations, visual closure, and visual discrimination.

VISUAL PERCEPTUAL SKILLS

Nishtha Bharadwaj
Rehabilitation Psychologist
PERCEPTION
Perception is a set of processes by which we recognise, organise, &
make sense of the sensations we receive from environmental stimuli
(Goodale, 2000).
STEPS IN THE PERCEPTUAL PROCESS

◦ The Environmental Stimulus

◦ The Attended Stimulus
◦ The Image on the Retina
◦ Transduction
◦ Neural Processing
◦ Perception
◦ Recognition
◦ Action
THE HUMAN EYE
THE CELLULAR STRUCTURE OF
THE MAMMALIAN RETINA
THE RETINA-GENICULATE
STRIATE SYSTEM
THE VISUAL AREAS OF THE
HUMAN CEREBRAL CORTEX
VISUAL PERCEPTUAL SKILLS
Visual Perceptual skills involve
the ability to organize and
interpret the information that is
seen and give it meaning.
VISUAL SPATIAL SKILLS
◦ Visual Memory
◦ Visual Sequential Memory
◦ Visual Form Constancy
◦ Visual Figure Ground
◦ Visual Spatial Relations
◦ Visual Closure
◦ Visual Discrimination
Visual Memory
It is the ability to immediately
recall the traits of an object or a
form..
Visual Sequential Memory
It is the ability to recall items in
a specific order.
Visual Form Constancy
It is the ability to manipulate
forms and find it among other
forms, although it may be sized
differently or rotated or
compressed.
Visual Figure Ground
It is the ability to locate an
object or specific information
in a busy background.
Visual Spatial Relations
It is one of the important skills of
Visual Perception as it is useful in
functional tasks. It helps to
understand the relationship of
objects within the environment. It is
considered important in laterality,
directionality and understanding the
right and left of one’s body.
Visual Closure
It is the ability to recognize an
object, picture, and word even
if it is partially hidden and a
small part of it is shown. This
skill is important for reading
and comprehension.
Visual Discrimination
It is the ability to determine the
similarities and differences in
two different things. It is
important to discriminate
between letters and words
visually as it is an important
component in reading.
