1st COT Math 8 Presentation

This document provides an overview of a mathematics lesson on systems of linear inequalities in two variables. The objectives are to solve problems involving systems of linear inequalities in two variables, determine if a coordinate is a solution, and draw the graph of each inequality on the same coordinate plane. The lesson includes greetings, classroom ethics, motivation, true/false activities to review inequalities, steps to graph systems of inequalities, examples, applications testing solutions, and an evaluation. Students are assigned questions to answer about determining solutions from graphs and characteristics of systems with or without solutions.

Abstract

 An ordered pair (x,y) is a solution to

a system of inequalities if it satisfies
all the inequalities in the system.
Graphically, the coordinates of
appoint that lie on the graphs of all
inequalities in the system is part of
its solution.

STEPS in graphing a system of inequalities in two
variables:

Example: 5x + y > 3 and y ≤ x – 4

 Complete the table below to
determine the ordered pairs. These
ordered pairs shall be plot in the same
Cartesian plane.
x 0 1 2
y
Substitute the values of “x” in the
inequalities. Change the inequality sign
into equal sign.
If x = 0 If x = 1 If x = 2

5x + y > 3 5x + y > 3
5x + y > 3
5x + y = 3 5x + y = 3
5x + y = 3
5(1) + y = 3 5(2) + y = 3
5(0) + y = 3
5+y=3 10 + y = 3
0+y=3
y = 3 + (-5) y = 3 + (-10)
Y =3
y = -2 y = -7
So (0, 3)
So (1, -2) So (2, -7)
If x = 0 If x = 1 If x = 2
y≤x–4 y≤x–4 y≤x–4
y=x–4 y=x–4 y=x–4
y = (0) – 4 y = (1) – 4 y = (2) – 4
y = -4 y = -3 y = -2
So (0, -4) So (1, -3) So (2, -2)

 Draw the graph of each inequality on
the same coordinate by plotting the
ordered pairs. Connect the points.
 Draw solid line ( __________ ) if the
inequality is ≤, ≥
 Draw broken line (- - - - - - - - - -) if
the inequality is >, <
 4.Test the inequalities with the following ordered pairs.
 Point A (5, -2) Point B (2, 3) Point C (1, -4)
Point D (2, -3)
 Shade the appropriate half-plane,
which includes the solution set or
ordered pairs of the inequalities.
 Recall that if all points on the same
line are included on the line are
included in the solution, it is a closed
half-plane, and the line is solid. On the
other hand, if the points on the lines
are not part of the solution of the
inequality, it is an open half-plane and
the line is broken.
 The region where shaded areas overlap
is the graphical solution to the system.
If the graphs do not overlap, then the
system has no solution.
Application:
 Determine if each ordered pair is a
solution of the system of the linear
inequality x + y = < 5 and 2x – y > 4.

(3, -1)
(4, -2)
(0, 1)
Application: ANSWERS
(3, -1) (4, -2) (0, 1)
x= 3; y = -1 x= 4; y = -2 x= 0; y = 1

x+y<5 x+y<5 x+y<5

(3)+ (-1)< 5 (4) + (-2)< 5 (0) + (1)< 5
2 < 5, TRUE 2 < 5, TRUE 1 < 5, TRUE

2x – y > 4 2x – y > 4 2x – y > 4

2(3) -(-1) > 4 2(4) -(-2) > 4 2(0) -(1) > 4
6 + 1 > 47 > 4, 8+2>4 -1 > 4, FALSE
TRUE 10 > 4, TRUE
Therefore (0, 1)
Therefore (3, -1) Therefore(4, -2) is NOT a solution
is a solution of is a solution of of the
the inequalities. the inequalities. inequalities.
Generalization:
 An ordered pair (x,y) is a solution to a
system of inequalities if it satisfies all the
inequalities in the system.
 To graph a system of inequalities in two
variables by graphing.
 Draw the graph of each inequality on the
same coordinate plane. Shade the
appropriate half-plane. Recall the if all
points on the same line are included on the
line are included in the solution, it is a

Generalization:

the graphical solution to the system. If
the graphs do not overlap, then the
system has no solution.
Values Integration:

Learn first the issue behind

a story and try to
understand it before making
judgment and sharing such
judgment to the others.
Other Subject Integration:

 Chemistry- In mixing chemical, there

is a need to determine the exact
chemical substance to mix in the
solution otherwise, there will be
incompatibility and will result to
disorder.
 Example: In making soap, Sodium
Hydroxide(NaOH) should be mixed
with oil because it has the substance
that make the soap hard.
