Forces and Matter

Forces can change the size and shape of objects. Springs are designed to stretch when a small force is applied. Hooke's law states that the extension of a spring is proportional to the applied load. The spring constant shows the stiffness of a spring and can be found by calculating the gradient of a force-extension graph. Pressure is defined as force per unit surface area. Hydrostatic pressure increases with depth due to the weight of the water above.

Forces and Matter

Forces acting on solids

Forces can change the size and shape of an object. They can stretch,
squash, bend or twist it.
Elasticity
After you apply forces to a solid and then you release the
forces to this solid, if the magnitude of the forces does not
exceed the elasticity limit of this solid, then this object
will return to its original size and shape.
In physics, elasticity is the ability of a body to resist a
distorting influence and to return to its original size and
shape when that influence or force is removed.
The best example about elasticity behaviour of a solid is
elasticity of a spring.
Springs are designed to stretch a long way when a small force is
applied.
Extension of a spring and Hooke’s Law
As the force stretching the spring increases, it gets longer. The increase in
length of the spring is called the extension. So it can be formulated :

Length of stretched spring = original length + extension

The first physicist who found the relation between the extension of a
spring against the load applied is Robert Hooke. He stated : the
extension of a spring is proportional to the load applied to it,
provided the limit of proportionality is not exceeded.
Formula of Hooke’s Law

The spring constant shows the stiffness of that spring. The bigger the spring constant then the spring will be
stiffer. The minus sign in the formula shows that the direction of the extension is opposite with the direction
of the spring force acting in the load.
FORCE AGAINST EXTENSION GRAPH

If you have force against

extension graph then the spring
constant can be found by finding
the gradient of the graph.

WHAT IS MATTER ?
• MATTER IS ANYTHING THAT HAS MASS AND TAKES UP
SPACE BY HAVING VOLUME.
WHEN YOU APPLY A FORCE TO A SURFACE AREA, IT IS SAID THAT YOU GIVE A PRESSURE
TO THIS AREA.
SO,WHAT IS PRESSURE ?
HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE

Hydrostatic Pressure ...Pa

The depth of a point that we want to

measure hydrostatic pressure...m

Density ...kg m-3

Acceleration of free fall...9,8 m/s2
