ARC FURNACE

• An arc furnace is an unbalanced, nonlinear and time

varying load, causing problems to the power system
quality.

• An arc furnace load causes unbalances, harmonics,

inter-harmonics and voltage flicker.

• The factors that affect the arc furnace operation are

the melting point, the electrode position, and supply
system voltage and impedance.

TRANSFORMER POWER CABLE
• The main arc furnace elements are: Transformer
reactance, power cable and arc source (the
electrodes).
• The causes of non linearity of arc furnace are:
Hysteresis and saturation in transformer core
Power Cable and arc of furnace

• The harmonics due to the non-linear voltage-current

characteristic of the arc
• Voltage fluctuations are due to the arc length changes
that occur during the melting of the scrap.
EFFECTS
• The current and voltage harmonic distortion causes
several problems in electrical power systems.
• These include
 incorrect operation of devices,
 premature ageing of equipment,
 additional losses in transmission and distribution
networks,
 over voltages and over currents.

MITIGATION TECHNIQUES
Mitigation techniques include:-
1 Increasing system capacity – Increase the system
capacity sufficiently large to decrease the impact of
flicker reducing load.
2 Static capacitors – Capacitors placed in series to
reduce load fluctuations.

3 Series reactor – Series reactor stabilize the arc

reducing current and voltage variations
WHY STATCOM ?
• Increasing system capacity means increasing the
rating of transformers etc, increasing cost factor

• Static capacitors can compensate less than its rated

capacity and requires efficient engineering

• The design of series capacitor is difficult and must be

coordinated with requirements.
• The disturbance can also be rectified using Static Var
Compensator (SVC)

• But SVC has a limited flicker mitigation capability .

• With the availability of forced-commutated

components, a STATCOM becomes possible to be
used as an efficient means to reduce voltage
fluctuations causing flicker.
• By proper designing of statcom with active filters
harmonics can also be eliminated.
OUR PROJECT
• We model the arc furnace system using SIMULINK ,
including a complete STATCOM model with its power
circuits and its control system.
• To quantify the amplitude of the disturbances
flickermeter is also modeled in Simulink.
• Static and dynamic performance of STATCOM is
evaluated and voltage fluctuation mitigation studies are
performed.
