SPRINGS

ENG’R. EDWIN C. ESPERANZA

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY HEAD
Problem #1.0
Determine the total number of coils,
free length, solid height, and the
deflection of the spring when it is
compressed to its solid height.
Assume a squared and ground ends
spring with a wire diameter of 15
millimeter, a pitch of 23 millimeter
and 10 active coil.
Given:

Square and Ground End Spring

P= pitch of coils
= 23 mm
Dw= wire diameter
= 15 mm
Nc= Number of active coils
= 10 coils
Nt= Total number of coils
FL= Free length
SH= Solid Height
δ = deflection
Solution:
For a Squared and Ground End Spring:

 Nt= Nc+2 ; FL= PNc+2Dw; SH= Dw(Nc+2)

Therefore;
 Nt=Nc+2= 10 coils + 2= 12 coils Ans.
 FL= PNc+2Dw= 23mm(10Coils)+2 (15mm)= 260mm Ans.
 SH= Dw(Nc+2)=15mm(10coils+2)= 180mm Ans.
 δ = FL-SH= 260mm-180mm= 80 mm ans.
Problem #2.0

Four extension coil springs arranged in parallel as shown

below has a load of 250 kgf determine the spring deflection
if each spring has a gradient of .6 kg per millimeter.
Given:
Four extension coil springs
K1 = k2 = k3 = k4 = 0.600 kg/mm
F1 = F2 = F3 = F4 = 250 kg/4 = load on
each coil spring
F = 250 kg = load that the four
extension coil spring supports
SOLUTION :
Spring deflection on each spring
For springs in parallel : δ1 = δ2 = δ3 = δ4
Therefore:
δ1 = F1 /k1 = 62.5 kg/ 0.600 kg/mm = 104.166 mm.
δ1 = δ2 = δ3 = δ4 = 104.166 mm. Ans.
Note : If the four coil springs are hooked in series,
the total deflection of the springs will be ;
δt = δ1 + δ2 + δ3 + δ4 = 104.166 mm. (4)
δt = 416.66 mm. Ans.
CONCENTRIC SPRINGS (for an outer spring longer than
inner spring)
Problem No. 3
The outer of two concentric helical springs has a rate of
2400 lb/in. The inner spring has a rate of 1750 lb/in. The
outer spring is ½ in. longer than the inner. If the total load is
8000 lbf. Find the weight carried by each spring.
GIVEN:
k1 = inner spring rate = 1750 lb/in
ko = outer spring spring rate = 2400 lb/in
Ft = total load = 8000 lbf = F1 + Fo
F1 = load carried by inner spring
Fo = load carried by outer spring
δo = δ1 + e = δ1 + ½ in.
δo = deflection of outer spring
δ1 = deflection of inner spring
SOLUTION:
Weight carried by each spring
For an outer spring longer than inner spring
Ft = Fo+ Fi δo = δi + e ko = Fo/ δo ki = Fi/ δi
Fo = ko δo = 2400 lb/in (δi) ; Fi = ki δi = 1750 lb/in (δi)
Therefore:
Ft = 2400 lb/in (δi + ½ in. ) + 1750 lb/in (δi)
8000 lb = 2400 lb/in (δi) + 1200 lb + 1750 lb/in (δi)
δ i = 6800 lb/ (415 lb/in)= 1.638 in.
Therefore:
Fi = Ki δi = 1750 lb/in (1.638 in)= 2,867.46 lbf Ans.
Fo= Ko δo= 2,400 lb/in (1.638in + ½ in)= 5,131.20 lbf Ans.
GIVEN:

C = Dm/Dw = 8.0
Ss = 3868 kg/
G= 808,720 kg/
δ = 30.48 cm = 0.3048 m
SOLUTION:
a. Wire diameter

Ss =
=
Ss = 3868 kg/
Dm = CDw
= 8Dw
K= + = + = 1.184
From the figure, F() = ∆PE + ∆KE
Since ∆KE = ∆PE
∆KE = mg(z1 – z2) where z1 = 0
z2 = 3m + 0.3048
∆KE = W(z2)
= 100 kg (3.3048 m)
= 330.48 kg-m

Then : F(0.3048) = 330.48 kg-m + 330.48 kg-m

F(0.3048) = 660.96 kg-m
F=
=2168.503 kgf
Then,
Ss =
3868 kg/=

= 13.5224
Dw= 3.677 cm Ans.
b. Mean Coil Diameter
Since C = Dm/Dw
Dm = CDw = 8(3.667 cm) = 29.418 cm Ans.
c. No. of active coils
δ=

Nc = == 10.204 active coils
