Equivalent Orifice

The document provides an example problem to calculate the size of a regulator needed to equalize airflow between two mine splits. It is given that Split A passes 15 m3/s of air with 500 Pa of pressure drop, and Split B passes 20 m3/s with the same pressure drop. The trunk airway consumes 300 Pa. Calculating the resistances of each split and the trunk allows determining the regulator size as 1.21 m2. With this regulator, the total airflow in the mine will be 31.72 m3/s.

Equivalent Orifice of a mine: The equivalent orifice of a mine is the area of an imaginary

opening in a thin plate which offers the same resistance to the passage of air as is offered by a
mine itself.

Where, A = Equivalent orifice in and R is the resistance of the mine in .

Example: Two ventilation splits A and B pass 15 and 20 of air respectively with a pressure drop
of 500 Pa across them. The trunk airway consume a pressure of 300 Pa. If the air flow in the two
splits is to be made equal by installing a regulator, calculate the size of the regulator, assuming
the fan pressure to remain constant before and after installation of regulator. What will be the
air flow in the mine after fitting the regulator?
